Economics has great value to society, through its importance in distributing both human and financial capital, shaping culture and opportunity. Such ideas have been implemented ever recently through scarcity, which implicates a criticality in deciding the resolution of problems in our modern-day socioeconomic climate. Yet what I love most, is the corroboration of solutions and theories to solve these dynamic issues, with real life implications. Specifically, the understanding and development of these problems could only serve to engage my enthusiasm further; allowing me to compound a lifelong passion. In doing so economics opens the door to both entrepreneurship and moral obligation.

In studying maths, and physics at A-level I’ve cemented core aspects of my selected degree. Namely, I’ve developed my ability to think critically and simplify complex models through a quantitative analysis, of the Natural laws of Newton; and in maths through the breakdown of patterns to extract conclusions. I believe I’ve encapsulated a key aspect of economics in the breakdown of complex mathematical solutions. However, this leaves a gap in my literary application, which I believe has been filled through economics, which adds a contextual application to the numerical values contrived by Maths and Physics.

Economics is a subject requiring mathematical capability, but also an underlying personable nature and a capacity to communicate to many types of people. In both my free and academic time, I’ve honed these skills. Through my engagement as a prefect, I’ve communicated across school years as well as to senior staff members in completing tasks showing a defined responsibility. Since last year I’ve worked with a local charity, Friends for Leisure, in which I’m helping a young disabled person through friendship, developing their social confidence. This continues to be an enlightening experience and has developed my ability to communicate to a range of people in different social settings. In achieving this, I partook an engagement with the institute of Employment studies. Having successfully navigated a vigorous UK wide selection process, I began the program in which as a ‘Young Adviser’ aged 16-25, I work closely with expert organisations to influence research and policy up to government level.

Earlier this year, I developed my own ecommerce business in which I briefly created and sold products designed by myself. These had been outsourced to a supplier in Spain and Estonia, which minimised risk. This taught me about the complications of both advertisement and the operations of a business and how an understanding of the economic climate can promote long term success as an entrepreneur. As an active worker at a conference venue, and its companioning restaurant, I’ve engaged in providing high quality service whilst communicating effectively within a team. This includes teaching junior staff members and participating as front of house, which has taught me lots about leadership responsibility and the value of teamwork. My understanding of industry was further developed during my work experience at a toxicology lab. This gave me a clear insight into how the quaternary sector engages its business operations and leads computer modelling. Thus applies to my interests in entering the monetary sector, through its use of financial and empirical data models.

The scope composed by economics at university seems invaluable to me, in both the academia of engaging within macroeconomics and the personable side, occurrent from societies and the experiences of meeting both likeminded students and experts. Furthermore, I am excited by the opportunity to live at university and develop my character socially and academically, whilst studying a subject I deeply enjoy and steeped in relevance to eventually progress my career into the economics field.
