Effects of School Uniforms on Bullying and Safe School Environment

Imagine you are being bullied at school because you don’t have the perfect clothes. Many schools are trying to stop bullying like this from happening by choosing to have school uniforms. The United States Congress should pass a law that all schools in the United States need to wear a uniform to school because wearing uniforms to school will reduce bullying, increase safety, and will promote learning. While some parents argue that Students lose their self-identity when they lose their right to express themselves through fashion.

School Uniforms will reduce bullying and increase safety, students feel as if they belong, and seeing everyone wearing the same uniform gives them a sense of belonging. According to the US Department of Education, “Wearing a uniform can reduce bullying, the risk of violence and theft, instill discipline and help school officials recognize intruders who come to the school” (DeMitchell). By wearing school uniforms, students will feel much safer and less worried about violence in school since the staff can recognize the students.

School uniforms will promote learning because when everyone is wearing the same uniform, students can focus on their learning, rather than the variety of clothes and accessories among peers. To School uniforms: Do they improve student achievement, “students will pay more attention to their classwork if they aren’t preoccupied with fashion, and that they’ll be better behaved” (Ordway). Wearing uniforms will help students get better grades and focus on their learning more.

Even though some people may argue that clothes are fashionable and they help students express their identity, I still believe when going to school students should wear uniforms since there are tons of benefits to uniforms including safety, preventing violence, and bullying. People need to understand that uniforms help students do better academically and help them feel accepted in addition to that uniforms make the school safer. So why not make a slight change that could change the educational environment for the better. We should speak more about it and the government should recognize that one way to make a student feel loved and accepted is by requiring uniforms since that could be a sign that everyone is viewed equally.
