Technology has revolutionized human intelligence vastly, yet our societal growth is tenuous to that of the past. The feats humanity has conquered are paramount to the state of bliss we live in today, plateauing for almost a decade since the consumption of computers. Though technology has enhanced humankind’s access to and enrichment of knowledge, technology has caused humans to become dependent on it and egotistical - completely absent of the outside world. The effects of technology have become a catastrophic deficit rather than a prosperous advancement for humankind.

Since the beginning of human civilization: humans have been the apex species through the copious amount of curiosity and innovation running through our veins. This rush for advancement has catapulted humanity through all the hardships of life and into prosperous living. The development of technology was once a great tool for human growth until becoming a necessity rather than a valuable guide, leading to our dependency of technology. This reliance on technology has shown similar characteristics to those addicted to drugs, “A 2011 study showed that unplugging from technology…Gave some users physical and mental withdrawal symptoms” (Source D). This tragic study showcases the grueling side-effects of technology on human well-being: taking hold of our physical and mental health. The unwarranted effects of technology have consumed mankind’s grasp on it and flipped the tables, switching the control to computers. Though technology can become a source of addiction, it is an incredibly practical tool, developing our reliance on it. According to a study conducted by Yale psychologists, “the web gives people an exaggerated sense of their knowledge” (Source E). The warping of our minds’ sense of intelligence is caused by our reliance on technology. The excessive use of the web leads to overconfidence in one’s aptitude, resulting in incompetence in substantial affairs. Through the addictive and reliant aspects of technology, it can be assumed that the abusive nature of technology is impeding the growth of the human species.

It is ingrained in human nature to be selfish, but the menacing effects of technology have prompted this tendency to an unprecedented amount. Humans have always carried a “narcissistic manner” in their ways of life, being the apex species. We believe that we own this world and treat it as we please, not taking into account the millions of other species that share this world with us. This has caused many to live in their own fantasy world, putting no thought into any aspects of life other than their own, bolstered by technology. This ideology has led to a deficit in essential skills, “Americans today are not more learned or skillful than their predecessors, not more knowledgeable, fluent, up-to-date, or inquisitive, except in materials of youth culture” (Source A). Instead of the use of technology as a skill bolstering tool, it is used as a device to constrict the human mind into trivial matters. Humanity is not focused on the substantial issues that are right in front of them: the deterioration of the human mind, and the rise of technology but instead on the social aspects of life. The effects of technology create an aloof individual, apparent throughout our world. These individuals are consumed with themselves, their social status, and their features, becoming imprisoned by the “technology shackles” (Source H). The dwindling functionality of humankind creates a robot-like individual, extremely self-absorbed and unaware of the outside world. Technology has taken control of the human mind and body, resulting in a species void of human likeness. The control of technology over humanity, putting humans into a pompous state of mind, has led to the deterioration of the little humanity left in our race.

Nevertheless, the grasp technology holds over the human race has held our species back from evolutionary excellence. The manipulative effects of technology lead to dependent and self-indulgent human beings, ingrained into our society today. While technology is a beneficiary and contributor to human growth, it has become a detriment to our advancement as a species. Will the grasp of technology forever hold the fate of humanity at its disposal, or will we figure out how to persevere into greatness?
