Since taking English 101, some of the experiences that will be taken from this class would be The Four Steps of Pre-Writing, experiences with the argumentative essay, and MLK’s Letter from Birmingham. The time spent in English 101 has been very informative and there were many lessons learned. Over the past 8 weeks Professor Watkins taught many lessons that will be carried on into English 102. These lessons can also be used on into future careers and many years to come. During English 101 Professor Watkins taught a group of young adults to become better writers for 8 weeks; she taught some very important lessons that include The Four Steps of Pre-Writing, how to write an argumentative essay, and how to pick out the 9 points in an argumentative essay by using MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail.

The first lesson taught during English 101 was The Four Steps of Pre-Writing. The four steps of pre-writing are brainstorming, clustering, free writing, and (working) thesis statement and MLA full sentence outline. When using step 1: brainstorming, use the general topic, qualifying words from the topic, or an opposite idea of the original word or idea. Set a timer of 5 minutes to brainstorm a list of 10 to 12 topics or words. Then chose three of those 10 to 12 topics which are subtopics to carry over to step 2 and 3. Step 2: clustering takes those three topics to give the writer a visual way to follow a train of thought on a topic, and find the best branch of thought to use for that chosen topic. The third step is freewriting, when using freewriting the writer sets a timer of 7 min and writes anything that comes to mind whether it pertains to the topic or not. When the writer is finished writing they need to read what was just wrote and look for little nuggets that could be a discovery for the topic. The final step of the pre-writing process is Step: 4 (working) thesis statement and MLA full sentence outline, creating a thesis statement is the most crucial part of an essay and the process; when creating a thesis statement, it needs to include a who, what, when, where, why, and how, a thesis statement can change while writing an essay to better fit the essay. The MLA full sentence outline uses Roman numerals, letters, and numbers to differentiate between major supporting details or topic sentences, specific details that expounds on the supporting detail. These steps will be used to create a structure of an essay from the introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Using MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail taught the 9 points of an argumentative essay which include, showing vs telling, process analysis, comparison and contrast, logos, ethos, pathos, flip side of the coin, stance, and wordsmithing. These 9 points are very crucial to help back a side of an argument while keeping a third person perspective. These points help in not alienating the audience that is reading the article or essay. When going over Letter from Birmingham Jail there were many instances in the beginning of ethos, pathos, logos, and stance which helped in writing an argumentative essay. Reading the letter was very informative in different ways by teaching the 9 points of an argument and also teaching a little bit of history, while also showing how smart and credible Martin Luther King Jr was in his lifetime.

When learning about the argumentative essay, there were many new things that were learned from a memo proposal, how to properly cite sources, how to find scholarly sources, and the 9 points of an argumentative essay. Memo proposals are used to propose what the author/writer wants to write about for the upcoming assignment. Learning how to properly cite sources is crucial when writing in a scholarly format whether it be in text citations or a work citied page in whatever format the subject requires. Knowing how to look up scholarly sources is imperative when writing papers, no matter the subject or topic to help either back a point or show the flipside of an argument. The 9 points of an argument are a necessary part of an argumentative essay because it uses wordsmithing, shows a stance, shows flipside of the coin, process analysis, showing vs telling, comparison and contrast, logos, ethos, and pathos.

In conclusion, English 101 has been a fun and sometimes stressful class, but there have been many things to bring away from this class that can be carried on to the work force. Professor Watkins has been a great teacher and has done a phenomenal job of making the topics she taught about easily understandable and usable. The topics that will be personally taken away from this class will be The Four Steps of Pre-Writing, MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, and the argumentative essay were the biggest topics that stood out. The skills and topics that Professor Watkins taught over the 8 weeks in English 101 to make her students better writers by imparting her knowledge to the class.
