What would be better to have as a leader, someone who is trained well, or someone who is educated well? These two words, train and educate, may sound similar, but they are not, and the purpose of this essay is to inform readers of the difference between training and education, as well as the reasons as to why education and training together are important, and finally the best way to integrate training and education to create a successful leader.

What is the difference between training and educating? According to Chris Barnes, “Education is all about learning the theory. Traditionally, an education may reinforce knowledge in which that you already have a foundation.” Chris states that training is “the skills to do something rather than just know about something. Training can be specific to your need, your vocation, or your skills gap. It is there for people who want to implement a new system, improve a specific ability or further their ability in something.” Both terms fall under the branch of teaching; however, they are quite different. Education involves learning concepts and the why behind things, as well as deeper levels of thought, focused discussions, and critical thinking. It involves the learning of theoretical ideas and understanding the why behind things. It is typically completed over a longer period and generally involves continuing education and other such courses. Training, however, involves a hands-on approach to learn a task and usually preps individuals to take some type of test or exam. It is usually done in a short amount of time and usually involves continuous repetition to commit a task to memory. So, now that the difference between the two is known, why is it vital for leaders to be taught using a combination of both education and training?

Training and education separate are simply not enough to nurture leaders. It is using a combination of these two methods to nurture great and effective leaders. As retired Army Colonel Frank Wenzel put it, “Training, education, and experience each contribute to development in a unique way. While training teaches skills, education teaches how to think. And experience is where it all comes together. This is where and when all the training and education are put into practice”. This statement helps to strengthen and drive home the importance of education and training together. Separately, training and education only help a leader go so far. A trained leader can only perform tasks and skills, whereas an educated leader may not be able to perform a skill but can explain the thinking and reasoning process behind it. As Daniel Burrus states, "The combination of both training and education enables another kind of innovation: everyday innovation. It empowers your entire staff to solve problems before or shortly after they happen, discover new efficient methods to streamline your operation, and propose solutions that will make seemingly intractable obstacles disappear.” The Army recognizes the need for this implementation and even instructs leaders to develop soldiers and themselves by using this method of training, education, and experience, versus just using one over the other. This method empowers leaders to be able to solve problems quickly, as well as be able to come up with multiple solutions to solve a particular problem. By doing this, leaders can make sound decisions, as well as educate their subordinates. So, now that the importance of training and education has been established, how can it be integrated into the military?

The integration of education and training takes time and utilizes several different strategies. The military typically integrates both training and education at the same time. For example, at the most basic and initial level, basic combat training, soldiers are trained in Warrior Task Level one skills. While being trained, soldiers are also educated as to the reasons why these skills and tasks are important and engage in critical thinking skills to complete their training. At every stage of the military, soldiers are taught using this same method, and the result of this method helps to foster leaders to become more involved and grow. The military recognizes the importance of both education and training and directs leaders to seek opportunities to further both education and training. Not only can this be integrated into the military, but it can also be used in the civilian world.

In this article, the difference between training and education was established and discussed, the reasons why education and training together are important, and finally the best way to integrate both training and education to create the best possible leaders. The military is an ever-changing organization, and as leaders, it is vital to always train and educate to be the best leaders possible, and to be able to successfully teach and train subordinates and peers, as well as ourselves.
