Everyone is different in how they deal with situations, but it is always important to be empathetic to people who you do not know, it could even be your own family members.  Even if you get so mad at someone for something they didn’t mean to do, you can affect them more than ever because of the situation they are going through.  The videos, “Umbrella,” by Stratostorm and “Joy and Heron,” by Passion Pictures, share the theme of empathizing with others. The video “Umbrella” is about a mother and daughter who go to an orphanage to donate some clothing and toys to the kids there.  The setting is stormy, so the girl brings a yellow umbrella, which triggers a bad memory for the boy they meet at the orphanage. Unfortunately, the boy’s father was poor and was forced to give him up for adoption.  The weather was also stormy on the night when his dad dropped him off at the orphanage and gave him a yellow scarf to remember him by.  The video “Joy and Heron” is about a dog and owner who go fishing one day.  The owner brought worms with him as bait, and a bird tried to steal the worms, and the dog got angry at the bird and began to bark.  When the owner and dog are heading back to the dock, their boat passes the bird’s nest and the dog sees why the bird stole the worms.  The authors of the videos use similarities and differences to display the theme.
Both cartoons share a similar theme of empathizing with others.  Both stories contain characters whose possessions are stolen, which makes them angry.   In “Umbrella,” the girl who brings the yellow umbrella to the orphanage gets angry when the orphan boy steals her umbrella and runs away with it.  The little girl quietly follows the boy to the attic and sees him shove the umbrella into the closet.  The girl insists that he return her umbrella, but when he doesn’t give it to her, a struggle occurs, which ends up knocking over the entire closet ( ).  Her mom comes upstairs to see what all the noise is about.  Feeling guilty, the boy hands over the umbrella and breaks into tears, explaining to the little girl that her yellow umbrella is his dad, who he misses.  In the video, “Joy and Heron,” the author emphasizes the theme of empathy when the bird steals the worms from the owner. The owner’s dog continuously barks at the bird for stealing the worms.  Eventually, after the owner hits the bird with a racket, it flies away.  While the dog initially feels happier than ever after his successful attempt to chase the bird away, he later passes the bird’s nest and notices a group of baby birds inside ( ). When the dog realizes the mother bird was stealing the worms in order to feed her babies, he feels so bad that he weeps for what he had done ( ).    Both stories also have similarities, by showing that because of the guilt of the bullies, they give up their stuff to need it more.  In “Umbrella,”  after the girl learns how difficult the boy’s life was without his father, she willingly gave him her most prized possession, which was her umbrella ( ).  In “Joy and Heron,” the dog gives the rest of the worms to the mother bird because the dog recognizes that the mother bird needed them more.  Both videos have similarities, that both of the characters get back something in return because of their acts of kindness.  In “Umbrella,” when the girl gives up her umbrella to the orphan boy, they become friends, and continue on together for the rest of their lives.  They grow old together, and open up an umbrella shop.  As the girl’s reward, the orphan boy keeps the umbrella with them ( ).  In “Joy and Heron,” once the dog realizes that the bird needed the worms more than he and his owner needed them, the dog gives up the worms, and as his reward, the bird gives them fish from the lake ( ).  These similarities all go together to form the theme of the stories.
Both cartoons have differences that still support the theme of empathizing with others.  The two videos are different because one focuses on human interaction while the other focuses on animal interaction.  In the video, “Umbrella,” a conflict develops between the boy and girl because he took her umbrella ( ).  In “Joy and Heron,” a conflict develops between the dog and bird because the bird was taking bait worms from the dog’s owner ( ).  One video shows a realistic interaction between two young children.  The story “Umbrella” shows conflict between a girl and boy who appear to be arguing over a possession that one wants and the other has, which is common in real life. ( ).  “Joy and Heron” has a fictional conflict between different animal species, a dog and a bird, who are not able to communicate with each other ( ).  The two objects represent different things.  In “Umbrella,” the umbrella reminds the boy of his father so he takes the yellow umbrella because he misses him ( ).   In “Joy and Heron,” the worm represents food that will help keep the baby birds alive ( ).
