A typical teenager nowadays desires the “normal” teenage experience of romance, parties, relationships, hobbies, and most importantly, self-discovery. However, teenagers of this generation, known as Gen Z, are expected to fix and bear the responsibility of the massive history and mistakes of the past. Significant matters such as climate change, the corona virus, racism, sexism, etc. are being given to the current youth despite their lack of power and their appropriate need for a normal teenage experience. It is a given assumption that the current teenagers must bear the consequences of the harmful actions made by adults of the current and past times. In response to this expectation, teenagers have become more aware and active in today’s politics and current world events. These teenagers are making active choices regarding education and improvement for the future but nonetheless, despite the immense responsibility expected of teenagers regarding the global future, teenagers do not have much respect nor power to put action into their thoughts during their adolescence. Although many may argue that current teenagers wield a powerful weapon no other generation has yet to utilize in their teenage hood, the Internet and social media, this “weapon” is the only plausible source of influence that teenagers have access to. With their increased awareness and open-mindedness, teenagers have taken advantage of the Internet and social media to spread their radical views and ideas towards society and its problematic issues. Although this mighty tool could be accessed by most teenagers, adolescents only harbor a little, if not no, influence to change their future for the better.

Despite the endless expectations upon a teenager, self-discovery today is the best part of being a modern teenager. Unlike our ancestors who had to focus on survival and family, today’s teenagers are equipped with the question, “Who am I?”. Although finding oneself is a journey to continue past teenage hood, the memories and experiences as a teenager is crucial to one’s essence of self. Teenagers go through a vast scope of encounters that crucially define who they are. For example, without my interaction with a boy in my sixth-grade class questioning my obnoxious trait of gloating, I would have never been as humble and friendly as I am now. Experiences of relationships and friends also contribute to this self-discovery journey to an extremely large extent. Despite whether these experiences were positive or negative, every teenager learns and develops socially, mentally, spiritually, and physically. This development in knowledge and experience contributes to a large part of teenager’s idea of who they are and what they stand for. Whether these adolescents mature and realize their development during or after their teenage hood, the core experiences that every adolescent goes through is what makes them unique. With every teenage life being completely unique full of tragedy, happiness, stress, ecstasy, etc. I believe that the best part of being a teenager is learning and growing through self-discovery.

Moderation, the avoidance of excess or extremes, is a concept that I would recommend to friends or younger people. As an adolescent, hormones are constantly fluctuating which causes an array of emotions and thoughts within a one’s body and mind. This lack of consistency leads a teenager to go to extremes whether it be their actions, thoughts, or personality. Through personal experience, I always suffered the consequences of lacking moderation in areas such as food consumption, technology usage, and sleep. The extremes that I went through caused my issues and stress to become further severe, which does not help with what one would call an enjoyable teenage experience. Always keep in mind moderation to keep oneself, others, and health in check and out of danger. Of course, there are situational exceptions to moderation such as eating a whole tub of ice cream after a breakup - a typical teenage experience. From my experience with myself and my peers, teenagers are bound to break this concept of moderation, especially with sleep, whether they like it or not. And with the mindset of moderation and the unstoppable, rebellious nature of modern teens, the casualties will be minimized. That is why I advise to always keep away from extremes when possible. However, that does not mean fun is not an option, being a teenager is to rebel and have as much fun as possible, just try to avoid extremes, having too much of one thing, fun or sadness, will eventually backfire and won’t do any good. My advice would be to take care and have fun!
