Essay about Lord of the Flies: Civilization vs Savagery

In each human, there exists a battle in their mind between making the wisest decision, remaining quiet, and utilizing viciousness to quench their most prominent longings. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding employs symbolism to relate current events   During one interaction between the group of survivors, one of the younger boys cultivates a conversation revolving around the sighting of a "snake-thing", which was the birthplace of the beast, "Tell us about snake-thing" (Golding 48). 

This statement shows us the sources of the monster, and the young men's unique interpretations on it. From the outset, they think it is a physical being and it scares the group. Later on in the book, the young men keep discussing the monster, and their interaction with the beast develops into acceptance for it as a divine being, deserving of adoration. “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!" (Golding 218). This statement depicts the connection between the youngsters and the beast. In this situation, the young men have concluded that the monster is a commendable god, and they begin to sacrifice items and create customs to "please" the monster. The transition from the origin of the beast, and having nightmares about it to treating it as a god, and worshipping it has a direct correlation with the boys level of violence. 

For instance, when the boys first start talking about the beast they are peaceful and nonviolent, but as the story went on, they began to be more violent, going as far as murdering their own friend because he tried to tell them the beast did not really exist.  When they began revering the monster, they were so intoxicated on violence that they even executed Simon since he attempted to persuade the young men that the beast wasn't genuine, and that it was indeed a part of their creative mind. Simon's homicide represents how the beast isn’t a terrifying creature but rather really the evil inside each of the boys. Albeit the vast majority go through their lives never utilizing viciousness to accomplish their most prominent longings, individuals consistently have savage musings. For instance, when individuals bully me about my body, I have a psychological response to simply punch them in their face, however, I cannot do that. 

William Golding works effectively utilizing imagery to show the psychological clash of staying silent, remaining tranquil, and utilizing viciousness to get a handle on their most noteworthy cravings. Golding makes a satisfactory showing of utilizing imagery to show this fight.
