Social media can be beneficial in many ways, but it can also be harmful. There are many different opinions about the topic of social media. Is it good or bad? Though social media has many benefits, I believe that it is more harmful than beneficial. Social media is a negative reality causing unhealthy relationships, less quality time spent with loved ones, and causes us to struggle with our self-image.

Social media can be toxic for relationships. Social media can come in between people and destroy what they have together. Most people use social media to find someone to date, but social media can ruin that if you are in a relationship. It is so easy to find someone else online. If you struggle with trusting people and what they do online, social media will get in between the both of you. Not only can you find someone else online when you are single, but it is also easy to cheat on a significant other. In today's world, technology is so powerful. You can talk to people behind your significant other's back and then delete any evidence. Social media helps people cheat on each other way too easily. There are many ways a person can talk to other people without anybody else knowing, which causes insecurities and trust issues in relationships.

Social media can be distracting. It can make you less interested in focusing on your family relationships. Many people use social media to keep in touch with family that is far away. But it does not help people to focus on the loved ones that they are with. It can be fun to post pictures and tell others about what you are doing with your loved ones, but if that is all you're doing when you are with them, then there is no quality time being spent. Often, teens and young adults spend most of their time on their cell phones, which creates a gap between family relationships. If your grandparents want to spend time with you, I'm sure they would prefer it if you weren't on your cell phone the whole time. When you spend quality time with family, please turn your phone off and talk to them instead of posting that you are with them. There is also a gap between generations, and with social media being a huge obsession these days, it is hard for the older people in your family to connect with you. If you're going to be on your phone, you might teach them what you are doing.

Social media can cause individuals to struggle with comparing themselves to others. One of the most popular social media apps these days is Instagram. This app allows us to share any photo we want. But if you struggle with body image or confidence, this app can be harmful to your mental health and confidence. You can follow the people you know or anyone you would like. Since it is such a popular app, many feel the need to have it and share photos. This can be hard for people who struggle with body image or confidence issues. You will see people living better than you or looking better than you. This can bring people down and cause mental health issues. There seems to be a need in today's social media to be popular or fit in. We all try our bests to have a presence on social media, but it can badly affect the mental health of the people who don't feel confident enough to post. Most Instagram posts contain selfies, body pictures, friend groups, etc. It is hard to feel happy about your own life if you are constantly comparing yourself to others.

Though social media can be beneficial, I believe that it is more harmful. Young kids, teens, and adults are trying their best to fit in with today's obsession with social media. What many people do not think about is how it is affecting our relationships and self-confidence. It can be a good thing if you don't allow it to come into your real life. Social media is supposed to be a fun way to connect and share with the people you know, but it is more harmful than beneficial if it affects the way you live and love.
