There are numerous skills and attributes necessary for an outstanding teacher, but many of them stem from content knowledge, flexibility, and passion. An outstanding teacher needs to have adequate knowledge of content in order to teach the students effectively. Therefore, the outstanding teacher will continue to seek professional development relating to his or her subject area so as to have as much current and up to date information about their content area as possible.

In addition to content knowledge, the teacher needs to have the ability to be flexible and adaptable in the classroom. Whether it is from one class period to the next or even from generation to generation, student needs are constantly changing. Moreover, the effective and impactful teacher is one that can monitor and adjust and meet the students where they are. I once had my own lesson in flexibility when I was teaching Kindergarten students what it meant to keep a steady beat. I had a lesson plan format that worked wonderfully for another Kindergarten class on the previous day, so I had anticipated the same result with the other classes. However, the method I used with the first class did not work at all with the second class, so I needed to adjust my approach on the spot. The second approach was much more successful with the students and gave immediate, useful insight on how the students in that particular class learn best. Flexibility is vitally important in reaching all students rather than only the students who fit into a certain learning style. With that being said, content knowledge and flexibility are crucial to successful teaching, but they will be even more enhanced by a passion for the subject in addition to a passion for the students.

It is monumentally important that a teacher has a heart for the students. Furthermore, it is also important to have passion about the subject area that the students are learning. As a music teacher, I will readily acknowledge the fact that the vast majority of my students will not grow up to be music teachers or musicians as full-time careers. Yet, I still aim to give all of the students whom I serve the opportunity to experience how much music can be a positive influence and enhance their lives even if it never becomes their life's passion. I must say that it would be almost impossible to incite excitement about learning music if I was apathetic about my subject area. Passion is a way for the outstanding teacher to show students that the subject area is indeed meaningful and should have a place in their lives. Ultimately, adding passion to strong content knowledge and flexibility in the classroom can be the difference between a satisfactory classroom experience and a truly great experience.
