In this essay, I will be expressing my thoughts on the question “Is Trumpism Fascism?”.Donald Trump was the 45th President of the United States, and during his time in office, he had done many questionable things, like creating the Anti-Immigration policy and openly expressing his racist attitudes. From the start to the end of his presidency one question has been most prominent in the media, and that is Trump and his movement Trumpism fascist?

As I see it, Trump is not a fascist, though he is not far from one, I do not believe he fits the term.

I believe that Trump isn't a fascist but rather he is a populist. My reason for this is that I believe he doesn'tseek to harm the country, but rather certain parts of it. I believe he used his presidency to shape the United States to match his populist views. Trump is a man with some-what radical ideas, and the things he did were often set to hurt the opposing or sometimes, indifferent people. Trump had ideas like “anti-immigration” and “anti-mask”, although these policies did not hurt democracy itself, they unequivocally warped liberal democracy in America. He used the notion of freedom to encourage followers, and he utilized pleasing the people who followed him, even if pleasing these people meant nailing the fault to minorities or unsuspecting people.

So in what ways is Trump a Fascist? Trump may not be a full out fascist but he uses fascist methods, for example, with his idea of anti-immigration, he was able to appeal to the people by inflicting fear, he told them that immigrants, were taking away Americans jobs and money, that immigrants more specificity Muslims and Mexicans, were radicals that wanted to harm the country; by saying this, he created a climate of fear and showed them the only way to avoid this outcome was to get rid of immigrants altogether. This might measure up to Hitler's idea of “anti-Jews and minorities” . Trump used the same tactic, but with different outcomes. The dilemma is, while Trump uses fascist tactics, that does not make him a fascist, nor does it make him unique in comparison to other presidents. Looking back, it's not uncommon for politicians to use fascist-like tactics, for example, former President Andrew Jackson.

The difference between other past Presidents/politicians and Trump is that Trump is a showman, he enjoys being the center of attention, so it would make sense that these fascist attitudes of his would-be are publicized.

Trump should not be compared to past or present European fascists, because he is not quite like them, and while different countries hold different types of fascists, the one thing that sets these historical figures and Trump is that people like Hitler wanted to destroy democracy altogether, while Trump only seemed to care about manipulating it a bit. One of Trump's biggest stunts was the storming of Capitol Hill. I believe America was lucky, as Trump did “try” to stop the rioting, even if his speech was obscure, he still said what needed to be said, and still de-escalated the violence. If Trump had encouraged the people to keep rioting, rather than urging them to go home, then it's possible that Trump could have been considered a type of fascist.

While Trump may not be a fascist, he is certainly a right-wing populist and a nativist. His nativism shows through his anti-immigrant policies, and his populism shines through almost everything else he does.

So in conclusion to this essay, I will fully answer the question “Is Trumpism, Fascism?”

No, I don't believe Trumpism is fascism, it is simply a mix between populism, nativism, and Trump. I believe this because when comparing Trump to populism and nativism, the similarities between these two significantly outweigh any of his fascist resemblances.
