In today's society, cancel culture blocks people from knowledge and truth using tactics such as pulling books from library shelves, not teaching subjects in history that could be deemed offensive, and firing people from their jobs for having different opinions. In this way, it acts much like a barbed wire fence keeping people from getting from point a to point b. Cancel culture has some positive and negative effects on society. There are countless different types of cancel culture such as military, education, and social. As Americans, we need to recognize the dangers of cancel culture and figure out a way to put a stop to it. Cancel culture is a significant problem in American society.

Cancel culture has been used by the military for numerous years. This type of cancel culture is more positive than negative in America. Cancel culture can be used by the military as protection for our country. For example, it can prevent outside invaders from learning about our newly developed technology. During WW2, military personnel would censor letters that were being sent home to family in case it was intercepted by an enemy. This could keep the enemy from figuring out their location or their plan of attack. This was an extremely smart tactic used by the US military. A negative aspect of cancel culture is that it causes the government to be in complete control. This can be negative because people want to have a say, and if they don't, people will start to be angry. Cancel culture used by the military is seemingly more acceptable than other types of cancel culture due to the many positive effects it has.

Cancel culture can also be used in education systems across America. This method is viewed as more negative than positive by society. I believe that the history of the world’s successes and failures is an important topic in education today. The main reason that we learn about history is so it doesn’t repeat itself. Although we recognize America’s mistakes, I believe it is still important to learn from those mistakes. Many other people have an opposing view and they believe historic events such as the Holocaust are offensive, and that students should not be exposed to that. I believe that the Holocaust was a huge collapse in society, which is an even bigger reason why it shouldn’t be removed from books or even education in general. Censorship in education can be problematic due to the loss of intellectual knowledge. America has spent decades of trial and error to get where we are today. The reason that loss of knowledge can be dangerous is because America may repeat the mistakes that have already been made. For example, if the Holocaust was removed from textbooks and no longer taught in schools then America would not be able to learn from this time period and may repeat what happened. Educational censorship can be harmful to America in the grand scheme of things.

Finally, cancel culture is also used in the media. This type of censorship can have a severe effect on a person's mental health. This can be problematic to society because it follows a “You are right, I am wrong” mentality. There is no justification of why the person being “cancelled” is wrong other than popular opinion. This mentality can take away the idea that each person has a right to their own opinion. For example, a singer may be afraid of pursuing what they love,1 due to the fear of being “cancelled”. This type of censorship is different from the other types mentioned because the citizens actually cause this type of censorship to occur. I believe this type of censorship violates the first amendment, which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This type of censorship takes away the “freedom of speech” that all Americans are entitled to. For example, the song “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction was cancelled because it points out insecurities in women. I believe this is an uninformed decision that is used to destroy a person's career. People can get offended by almost anything, so therefore cancel culture of the media is usually biased. Cancel culture in the media can be self-degrading to some people.

Putting a stop to the idea of cancel culture could positively impact America in the future. The real question is, how do we do that? There are numerous pathways we could take as a country to eliminate cancel culture. For example, educators could revise how they teach certain topics, such as the Holocaust, so it is not seen as offensive. This way students would still learn what America did wrong in this situation, and what they could do better in the future. This would be better than cutting the event out of history completely and just acting like it never happened. Another solution to this problem is that the military could give a reason to the public eye as to why they need to remove documents, so citizens can’t see them. They could explain that it is protecting our people and our country. This may cause more people to understand and stop asking questions. The military could also create a place that encompasses all of the secret information and make it so only US citizens are able to enter that building. This would give citizens security knowing that there is a place they can get answers if they care that much. A way to stop cancel culture in the media is for the person being “cancelled” to explain why they said or did what they did. This could help citizens understand things better from their point of view. This would also remove an abundance of the backlash they get for doing what they did. I presume that cancel culture is not necessary today and should be removed from all aspects of life.

All things considered, America should remove cancel culture as it affects the daily lives of many people and the country as a whole. Cancel culture is an extremely dangerous aspect of life today and should be changed, if not removed completely. Cancel culture will continue to negatively impact the daily lives of countless people as long as nobody fights to put a stop to it.
