“A hero is someone who walks voluntarily into the unknown”. When a hero puts their lives on the line they don’t know what they’re getting into; they're just there to help people in need. A hero is a selfless person who is willing to put their lives in danger for someone else. A hero is allowed to be nervous but their actions speak louder than words.

Heroes can have a lot of influence on people around them. Frederick Douglass wrote,” on the third day of September 1838, I left my chains, and succeeded in reaching New York without the slightest interruption of any kind.” Frederick Douglass was a former slave, he was well known for being an activist, public speaker, and author. Douglass running away had to take a lot of courage; he may have been scared, but he did it anyway. He was a big figurehead during the Abolitionist Movement. In addition, Frederick Douglass made a huge influence during the abolitionist movement. He was just a runaway slave who didn’t know how to read or write but, he beat all odds and made a good life for himself.

Although, people might think that heroes are always brave and never fear anything they are mistaken. Heroes are allowed to be scared, at the end of the day heroes are just ordinary people that do good acts of heroism. For instance, Gale Fiege wrote,” My eyes were completely bandaged, and I was in a lot of pain, so when I woke up it felt like I was in a coffin.” Soldiers experience life-threatening situations while they’re in combat, civilians would freeze under this pressure but soldiers will use their training to remain calm and preserve. These situations are scary for soldiers because they fear not being able to return home alive for their loved ones and families. Soldiers are heroes to their countries so, even if you are unsure of the skills you have you can still rise above all odds and leave behind a legacy.

What traits does society consider for someone to be heroic? People might say they have to be courageous, brave, and valorous. One thing that heroes might be is daring, or even bold. This means that they have the bravery to do what other people in society might be against. For example, a great historical figure Abraham Lincoln  announced the Emancipation Proclamation; which would free many slaves. He knew people would loathe it, but he knew it was the right thing to do. According to “Sermon from White House Funeral Sermon for Abraham Lincoln” it states,” He is dead: but the cause he so ardently loved, so ably, patiently, faithfully represented and defend-not for himself only, not for us only, but for all people in all their coming generations, till time shall be no more-that cause survives his fall, and will survive it.” It took a lot of courage for Abraham Lincoln to announce the Emancipation Proclamation but, true heroes know what's right and what’s wrong and it didn’t matter the backlash they were getting, they know what’s truly right in their heart.
