You would never be able to imagine the look on the face of a mother who was just told by her daughter that she wanted to end her own life. I still think about that look on my mom's face before I go to bed some nights, and every so often is the first thought I have when I wake up in the morning. My time on earth has been limital, not even a blip in our universe's storybook, but my experience has been entirely unique because I was born with a chemical imbalance that makes serotonin and dopamine receptors in my brain unable to uptake the proper amount of each of those chemicals. Simply speaking, my brain and body are deprived of some of the human body's 2 happiest chemicals. This is what led to my diagnosis of chronic depression, something I have struggled with for almost my entire life.

When I started high school, I was struggling with getting out of my own bed in the morning, let alone getting to school and trying to actively participate in my education. I missed almost half of my sophomore year due to my mental illness, directly making my depression even worse. My life had turned into a constant game of cat and mouse with school and my own depression. After years upon years of attempting to combat my mental disorder, which was left undiagnosed until the end of my sophomore year, I reached my breaking point. This breaking point is what led me to tell my own mother that I felt my existence, that she brought into this world, was so miserable and painful that I wished to take myself out of it. She still blames herself to this day.

This conversation with my mother would turn into hours upon hours with different therapists and different cocktails of medications that were poured down my throat by the handful, coupled with the same catch up game I had already been playing with the school. I was almost as unhappy as when I started my journey to getting better, until the day came where we found the perfect medication to treat my depression that truly made my everyday life easier. Soon after this change in my therapy, my mental health started getting much better and I even found my passion in life. I hope to be a child and adolescent psychiatrist to help kids like me who don’t understand their feelings, as well as helping the parents of kids who are suffering from mental illness.

To go into the career I wish to pursue I need to put myself through college, which has become increasingly difficult within the last 2 decades. I have learned that what some people see as a crutch that one can become dependent on, is what I see as a helping hand that would benefit anyone. Extra assistance in the future of my schooling and career would aid me in achieving my dream of becoming the helping hand for kids like me who need extra support.
