Lexi Embry 10th Honors English Mrs. Webster 18 August 2021 Title Have you ever met somebody that is addicted to their phone? In 1953 Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451, the people in the book are addicted to technology and are oblivious to what’s going on in the real world. In this novel, people can’t read books because they are banned so they turned to technology to keep them entertained. Guy Montag is the main character and firefighter. Instead of firemen putting out fires they start the fires. This essay will talk about how technology is replacing human interactions by increasing isolation, destroying relationships, and people not being alert to the real world. People have resorted to sitting inside all day and watching TV.

This society has created a virtual world far from the real world. Montag’s wife Mildred watches TV so much that she calls the actors on the shows her family. “Poor family, poor family, oh everything gone, everything, everything is gone now…” ( Bradbury 52. ) People who live there don’t know any different because it is considered normal for them. While Montag is sick in bed Mildred tells him how he needs to go to work and how he’s not actually sick. She is also watching tv and not taking care of him or worried about him. Captain Beatty shows up to check on him and tells him how every firefighter goes through an itch and eventually gets over it, he says that they realize that books don’t tell you anything. When Beatty leaves Montag reveals the books he had hidden and tells Mildred that they are in this together and can’t get out of it, instead of Mildred staying quiet about them she turns him in. She was afraid that she would lose her family on the tv. By Mildred doing this it shows that she cares more about her family on the tv than her husband. “ No, Millie, no! Wait! Stop it, will you? You don’t know… Stop it!” ( Bradbury 63. ) Montag asks Mildred if she remembers when they met and she can’t, she says it's been so long. He then tells her that it's only been 10 years. This makes him start to think and he realizes that he wouldn’t be sad if his wife died because their marriage is just a title and it doesn’t have a meaning. People are so caught up in technology that they don’t see how much damage there is in their town. Theres always a constant war going on and people driving down the road as fast as they can.

They made extra-large billboards so that people can see them when driving so fast. “The bombers crossed the sky and crossed the sky over the house, gasping, murmuring, whistling like an immense, invisible fan, circling in emptiness.” (p. 33). It's “normal” in their town for houses and everything inside the house including the owner to be burned down if they find a book in the house or on the person. In conclusion, technology has replaced human interaction by increasing isolation, destroying relationships, and people not being alert to the real world. This society has created a virtual world far from the real world. Montag starts to think and realizes that he wouldn’t be sad if his wife died because their marriage is just a title and it doesn’t have a meaning.
