In this essay, I would like to talk a little bit about the character of U.S presidents, using various sources to support my arguments.

In the first place, I want to clear out that every president's character is different from each other and therefore their presidencies had unique styles.

Secondly, I would like to put Lincoln as a first example because, according to Goodwin (2019) "he was a leader both merciful and merciless, confident and humble, patient and persistent—able to sustain the country's spirits and translate the meaning of the struggle into words of matchless force, clarity, and beauty. Take another example: Franklin Roosevelt’s confidence and infectious optimism restored hope and earned the trust of the American people through both the Great Depression and World War II. And Lyndon Johnson’s Southern roots and legislative wizardry ideally fitted him for the great Civil Rights struggle that altered the face of the country."

Having said all that, I would like to add that both Franklin Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln were great leaders because, while Roosevelt had a pretty strong vision for America's future, both effective communication, and crisis management skills, and dared to make unpopular decisions such as the New Deal, which, believe it or not, somehow helped relieve the effects of the Great Depression; Lincoln, on the other hand, was both merciful and merciless, confident and humble, patient and persistent—able to sustain America's spirits and translate the meaning of the struggle into words of matchless force, clarity, and beauty; in addition, like Roosevelt, Lincoln also dared to make unpopular decisions such as the Emancipation Clause, which would make slavery illegal, but at the same time cause the Civil War, which led to several Southern states to secede from the Union and become the Confederate States of America.

But let's not forget the fact that Lyndon Johnson was also very influential because he advanced several legislations such as the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act, which, believe it or not, helped somehow diminish the discrimination that African-Americans suffered before; furthermore, according to History Channel (2021) "the Civil Rights Act prohibited racial discrimination in employment and education and outlawed racial segregation in public places such as schools, buses, parks, and swimming pools.

In addition, the bill laid important groundwork for several other pieces of legislation—including the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which set strict rules for protecting the right of African Americans to vote—that have since been used to enforce equal rights for women as well as all minorities and LGBTQ people."

Last but not least, I believe that character is important in each president because, as I said before, all presidents took completely different approaches to the presidency. Take Franklin Roosevelt for example, he had a pretty strong vision for America's future, both effective communication, and crisis management skills, and dared to make unpopular decisions such as the New Deal, which, believe it or not, helped in some way relieve the effects of the Great Depression. Or Abraham Lincoln, who also dared to make unpopular decisions such as the Emancipation Clause, which would make slavery illegal, but at the same time cause the Civil War, which led to several Southern states seceding from the Union and becoming the Confederate States of America.
