Essay On Dark They Were And Golden Eyed

In the science fiction short story "Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed" it illustrates the story about the Bittering family, who is reallocated to mars due to an atomic war on earth. In the beginning, it describes that Harry Bittering was not too thrilled about the change, he wanted to go back to earth. The rest of the bittering family didn't mind it, in fact they kind of liked the change in scenery. Soon after, the Bitterings figure out that all the space rockets have blown up and there would never, ever be anymore rockets to mars. Harry wasn't taking it. So, he decided to build his own rocket to take him back to earth, but no one else had faith in him. 

The middle explains that Harry was noticing many changes in his surroundings. The peach blossoms, radishes, carrots, the roses, the cow. Their house, the furniture and their yard. Harry also refuses to eat food they grow in their garden. He insists it has to be deep freezed from earth. Harry decides to go swimming in the canals and harry starts to notice his family's eyes turning a yellow color, and their skin getting darker, they were also getting taller and slimer. His children then came to him and told him that they wanted to change their names. Harry, and his wife Cora agreed. Harry now knew that something fishy was really going on. They were turning into Martians. 

In the end, the citizens of the small town on mars decide to move to a nice villa. Harry didn't want to because he said he needed to keep building his rocket. But harry was becoming weak due to not eating and the summer heat. The other towns folk insisted that finishing in the autumn would be much better. Harry refused, but soon gave into their nagging and made the decision to move to the villa. While talking about where their villas were, they started to change the names of the landscapes. Autumn soon approached and Harry's wife brought up the fact that it was time for them to go back to the rocket. But Harry says he wants to stay because "there's nothing there anymore." They were full on martians. The earthman came back after the war was ended. When the arrived on Mars, there was nothing but an empty town. However, one of the earthman met the Martians and said they were very nice and learned english fast. But soon after, the earthman started to change the names of the landscapes, too. They were turning too.
