Introduction

Forensic science technicians (FST), also known as forensic scientists, use state of the art technology in order to find scientific evidence. The most common occurrence of forensic analysis involves criminal case investigations, though many scientists use this method of analysis in some civil cases. From kidnapping and murder to fraud and property damage, the involvement of forensic science is imperative when pursuing justice in many cases. Unfortunately, society will always need forensic scientists. On the bright side, most people employed as forensic science technicians know that their job is steady as well as reliable.

Academic Fit for Me

I’ve always been interested in careers in the medical field, however, I’ve found forensic science to be especially intriguing. I believe that the educational pathway to become an FST is less strenuous compared to other medical professions, but it’s also mentally enriching. Considering that I am actively pursuing an associates degree in science through dual enrollment, it would be a simple process to finish the remaining years of schooling with minimal debt. Becoming a forensic science technician does not require an extensive education. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Forensic science technicians typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in a natural science, such as chemistry or biology, or in forensic science.”  Furthermore, earning a bachelors in a natural science would benefit me if I were to switch careers in the future.

Social Fit for Me

As odd as it may sound, I often thrive in stressful environments. I often work to the best of my abilities with added pressure, I can keep calm and collected under many circumstances. This is a great skill to have when working as a FST. You must be able to communicate your findings effectively with others. According to CareerProfiles.info, “(FSTs) typically work 40 hours each week, but they're often required to work overtime to meet deadlines.” Forensic scientists frequently travel to crime scenes for a first hand account. Working long hours to complete tasks is not a major concern for me, knowing that I’m working towards providing justice is worth any overtime. Even factoring in overtime, compared to other medical professions there is a considerable amount of time for leisure. I would have the opportunity to pursue an entry level job while also having a social life; Some may argue you could not have both in reference to other medical pathways.

Financial Fit for Me

In my opinion, the salary of a forensic scientist is not my ideal amount of income. To be fair, I’m an overachiever. According to the BLS, the average salary was $63,170. Moreover, the highest paid FSTs made $97,350 annually. Compared to other high stress medical occupations, working as a forensic scientist with an entry level job is on the mid-low end of the spectrum, earning roughly $38,000 a year as stated by Zippia.com. Wages vary based on employers, for instance, non-profit organizations often attract the most workers, but government and healthcare companies pay the highest salaries. Location of employment is also critical, there is a large variation of salary between cities. As reported by Zippia.com, forensic scientists in Tacoma, Washington have the highest salaries in America at approximately $71,929.  In contrast, if you are a FST in Tupelo, Mississippi, you are making $46,174.

Conclusion

Following my research on forensic science technicians, I’ve decided that if I were to pursue this career it would benefit me greatly concerning future career goals. While I most likely wouldn’t stay employed as a forensic scientist technician for all of my life, it would definitely be an interesting job to have right after earning my bachelors degree. Additionally, this job would provide me with valuable experience in both the medical and law fields. In the end, the lifestyle of a forensic scientist, in addition to the level of academic skill required, would fit my personal needs in life.
