Washington’s childhood was modest compared to other historical figures of his time. Washington was born in Westmore County, Pope’s Creek, on February 22nd, 1732 into a family of eleven. His parents were named Mary Ball and Augustine Washington. They moved to Ferry Farm six years later in 1738. Sadly, five years after moving to Ferry Farm his father, Augustine Washington, passed away. George Washington was the oldest of the six children. When his father died, he inherited the slaves he had prior to his death.

George Washington did have a family and a wife. George Washington’s wife was Martha Custis, he married her in 1759. Martha married Daniel Parke Custis on May 15, 1750. Daniel died on July 8, 1757. After his death, Martha became a widow. George Washington and his wife did not have children, but Martha brought Jacky and Pasty and George Washington adopted them. Pasty died to a brief seizure in 1773 and Jacky died of an unknown cause, it being either camp fever or epidemic typhus.

George Washington had religious beliefs too. George Washington was Anglican. He believed, wanted, and fought for religious freedom. He attended church regularly prior to and after the revolutionary war.

George Washington’s schooling was a bit different than what we thought it would be. He was a homeschooler, rather than being sent to formal schooling. He also used to be a surveyor. George Washington never went to college, but he did study geometry and trigonometry. He finished formal schooling at the age of 13. He was 22 years old when he became a soldier in the French and Indian War and was 43 when he joined the Revolutionary War.

George Washington accomplished many things throughout his life time. He helped the colonial army win the Revolutionary War as Commander-in-Chief. He helped create the constitution by drafting the first known copies of it. He was known as one of the greatest leaders in the world. He protected us from entering the French Revolution. He was also a soldier in the French and Indian War.

George Washington is a great person in general. He was the US first president. In 1796, he chose to not run for a third term as president and retired. Sadly, on December 14, 1799 he died of an unknown disease, most likely pneumonia. He has a memorial in Washington D.C, and his tomb is in Mount Vernon. He is remembered as our first president and for helping us to win the Revolutionary War.
