Navigating life as a gay mixed-race individual has presented me with many challenges, however this shaped my outlook on the importance of uplifting underrepresented groups. My hometown was a homogenous environment in both thought and demographic, which at times felt very isolating. Although I had friends who unconditionally supported me, being the racial and sexual minority was trying. It is difficult to speak up when you feel your entire essence is against the grain of “normality”. Even the most outspoken can feel silenced if they do not have a receptive audience.

What had a profound impact on my experience were the individuals who recognized and welcomed my identities, as well as listened to my perspectives and empathized with my circumstances. Most importantly, these people stood with me and amplified my voice so that I felt supported while navigating instances of racism and homophobia.

It is important to uplift others and ensure their voices are heard, especially minority groups who are often overlooked in crucial conversations and decision-making processes. Especially in the field of nursing, it is imperative to ensure that patients are comfortable sharing their experiences and know that they will be treated equitably. I strive to be one of the individuals that helped me feel comfortable as a minority, and actively seek to acknowledge others’ experiences and emotions while properly addressing their needs.

I am passionate about preventive care and identifying at-risk individuals prior to the development of major complications due to lifestyle diseases. I hope to advocate for underrepresented groups to improve healthcare accessibility and take a public health approach to target these groups through community outreach programs. Lifestyle diseases pose a substantial risk to Americans and are especially prevalent in minority communities due to healthcare disparities. As such, the need for equitable healthcare facilities in these underserved regions is imperative, and I feel a personal and moral obligation to improve this disparity. As a minority myself, I recognize the issues that disproportionately affect people of color, such as accessibility to healthcare and education, increased disease mortality rates, and diminished quality of care stemming from implicit bias. I am receptive to the diverse issues that pose barriers to minority communities, and I am dedicated to improving local healthcare systems in disadvantaged neighborhoods by enacting change within to determine suitable medical advancements based on community perspectives.

While nursing is undoubtedly challenging, my aspirations are compelling, and I am eager to embark on my educational journey and to promote valuable improvements within the healthcare field. There’s an abundance of issues that need to be tackled at the heart of the community, and integration into these neighborhoods to truly understand their perspective will help improve these issues in the best way possible for that specific demographic. Regardless of your background and identity, patients deserve to be in the care of someone who will listen to them. The Nurses Corps Scholarship Program would give me the connections, resources, and financial freedom to be that person and advocate for change.
