For every health profession or work industry, there are skills that one must learn or develop for the position. Before hiring, employer often seeks for capabilities and knowledge of unique skill sets. Soft skills plays an important role within the healthcare fields and are always being used in many workplaces. Soft skills are known as character traits and interpersonal skills that shows how a person engage with others. It can positively affect professional and personal lives and are critical to a successful career and vital to the organization. This essay will focus on defining soft skills, how these skills are essential to patients, job duties and education requirement of nursing, and conclude it with the important of soft skills for my profession. 

Most employer are looking for employees with "soft skills”. So, what exactly are they? Soft skills are skills everybody have or can have. It cover a wide range of skills like positive attitude, being a team player, problem solver, work well under pressure, good communication, compassion, empathy, and honesty. Being in an dynamic environment, almost everyday we have to deal with people from various background directly or indirectly. So, to better serve and understand patients and their families during their visit within the organizations, health professionals must display these skills. Soft skills play a critical role in the health care system because these skills tend to be more personal and have developed over time. Therefore, soft skills are needed within the health care system due to the variety of people they communicate with. Having soft skills helps develop a therapeutic relationship with both the patients and their family. This relationship enable the patient to trust and creates a sense of peace while they are being cared. Soft skills are necessary for Nurses to providing the best quality of care and meet the needs of all patients in the healthcare system. 

Nurses had made the world a better place with their dedication and hard work. The career seems very fascinating and interesting. Nurses take on many roles and tasks throughout the days. They faced many challenges and have to make critical decisions. Becoming a nurse can be difficult and required commitment, time, and attention. The steps need to become a registered nurse require graduating from a two years associated degree or four year university. Once, this step is completed, you have to study and take the NCLEX, it is a exam all nurses must pass to become a licensed registered nurse. Nursing offered many different career option that suits their lifestyle. Nurse can work in many variety setting like clinics, school, hospital, nursing homes, and community health center. Registered nurses in California earn an average of 102,000 each year. However, this can fluctuate depending on your job, employer, and experiences. 

When I complete my schooling, I wish to become a registered nurse. Nurses are such an important asset to an organization. I want to become a nurse because it is my way of giving back to the community and nursing goes far beyond the caring and treating patients. Nursing is more then just caring for patient’s physical needs, but psychological and spiritual needs as well. Patient’s rely on nurses for many reasons and with that, soft skills is important for nurses to effectively deliver safe and high quality care. Some of the soft skills I feel that are most important for nurses to have are communication, attentive listening, empathy, and appropriate body languages. These skills are incredibly important within the healthy system that helps demonstrate caring qualities and develop nurse-patient relationship. Nurses are often patient first contact before anyone, so having soft skills are crucial to help reduce patient’s anxiety, produce a senses of safety, and putting them at ease. Therefore, nurses use soft skills everyday throughout their shift. 

In conclusion, soft skills are personal attributes that are necessary to succeed in the healthcare system, including nurses. Two of the most common ways to become a registered nurse are an ADN program at any community college or an BSN at a university that takes four years. Jobs for nursing are in high demands and they can usually work anywhere depending on experiences. Soft skills can be learn in nursing school, but it is important to keep applying these skills to refine them. When nurses shows compassion and competent care, it can affect patient’s satisfactory and outcome during their visit.
