Most Americans live in a big city, where there are millions of people. But some people prefer to live in a small town. The big cities are filled with crowded streets, pollution problems, and crime rates are through the roof. In a small town, people get to enjoy more freedom and a more peaceful lifestyle. This paper was written to inform the people of America, the benefits of living in a small town.

Smaller towns have a tight-knit community. Everyone seems to recognize each other. “Living in a small town is kind of like having a family of 1000 people. When something tragic happens, you feel the love from every single person, and when something great happened, you’ll probably be in the newspaper” (Cosmopolitan).  Because there are not many people, everybody is more connected with their neighbors. People in small towns are more willing to help or reach out when someone needs help. Everyone is more benevolent to each other. In big cities, there are millions of people, it is impossible to know everyone, so most people just keep to themselves.

Living in a little town is safer. “In small towns, people do not lock their doors at night and kids are allowed to walk across town to a friend's house without supervision. No one commits any crimes because if you did, chances are that someone you know will see you doing it” (Cosmopolitan). Having a safer environment to raise children may lead many people to small towns.“There is always more crime in a big city, causing you second guess your decision for living in a big city” (World of Mom Blogs). People are much more likely to be a victim of a crime living in a big city than in a small town. Statics show that in big cities in the US have seen an increase in murders in 2020.“Major American cities saw a 33% increase in homicides last year as a pandemic swept across the country, millions of people joined protests against racial injustice and police brutality, and the economy collapsed under the weight of the pandemic — a crime surge that has continued into the first quarter of this year” (CNN). Large cities have people that can get away with many crimes because there are so many people to keep track of, it is impossible to monitor everyone. Most people would rather live in a safer environment, not just for themselves but also for their families.

Traffic is terrible in the city. “Traffic can be a nightmare in a big city. It can get so bad that it can turn you into an evil person” (World of Mom Blogs). Being in traffic that is long and sometimes unpredictable can cause people to be late. It even could cause someone to get fired if it happened repeatedly. It is quite the opposite in a small town.“It takes 15 minutes to drive 15 miles. Because only 5 of those miles are actually in town. The rest are country roads with zero traffic and no cops to stop you from speeding” (Cosmopolitan). In small towns, there are just not many people so therefore not a lot of cars going everywhere. And there are no cops to stop people because there is not a lot of crime in small towns. Probably can not use traffic as an excuse for being late in a small town.

Pollution is an issue for the big city. “Pollution is a sad reality for big city life and one of the biggest disadvantages. It would always sadden me when I would drive into the city for work in the morning and see a teeming cloud of smog hovering over the downtown skyline. Unfortunately, pollution may always be a problem despite the efforts made to reduce pollution such as signs on the highway stating you not fill up on gas now your yard after 6:00 pm” (World of Mom Blogs). Most of the pollution is caused by heating large buildings and construction sites. Emitting all of those harsh chemicals into the air is very concerning. In a small town “You can see the stars at night. Something you’ll always miss once you finally move away” (Cosmopolitan). Because they do not have all the people and all the buildings to cause a lot of pollution, it does not fog up the sky and enjoy nature.

Living in a small town is also more affordable. People will pay way more for the same amount of square footage in a big city, just because of location. Everything is more expensive in the city, driving places- you will use more gas, groceries, healthcare, pretty much everything. In a small town because they don’t have the population numbers they have to make their prices more competitive. But people who live in large cities still have a low salary, leading to more poverty and homelessness. Which is a big problem in the cities.

It is hard to compare small towns and big cities because they both have advantages and disadvantages. But it seems that you will have a better quality of life growing up in a small town, although the city might be more galvanizing. Small towns do not have to deal with crowded streets, muggy skies, and the fear of getting robbed. Large cities are more stressful, expensive, and populated. Most people do grow up in large cities, so maybe their opinion is different. But as someone who has lived in both, I can say without a doubt, growing up in a small town is better.
