After high school have you ever thought to yourself there could be more than just the mundane school life? Have you ever felt stressed to choose a career path in high school? Consider talking a gap year. A gap year is a break you may choose to take after graduating from high school to pursue other career and life opportunities. A gap year can play a vital part of growing up. You may find yourself wondering the pros and cons revolving around a gap year. Given the opportunity students around the globe have the choice to take a gap year or continue education right away. Occasionally, a gap year can offer student opportunities to truly find themselves. Taking a gap year can serve you financially, educationally, and mentally. 

When graduation occurs, students need to ask themselves an important question; on how they would like to pursue a career. Teens rush into fulfilling their dream occupations without considering the costs that is needed to attain this dream life. Taking a gap year can save teens and young adult’s money and prevent potential debt. Many students may decide to pick up a retail or service worker job. Arguably a minimum wage job may seem like a waste of time, however, job experience is a must on every resume written. A job can be a wonderful plan for saving for higher education. A minimum wage job is something every teen should partake in. The experience from a job can teach teens life lessons that school cannot provide. Taking years off school and picking up a job will show young adults how to manage money, and they will learn to budget. Students are better off taking the time to learn how money works. A break will clear the mind of a young student and allow them to consider all of their options in life. In the long run, getting a part-time job can save a student plenty of money and teach them basic adulting when moving onto higher education. We can conclude that students are happier when ready and able to finically support themselves. 

Evidence shows that students come out of high school feeling worn out. Educationally, a gap year can offer insight and clarity on the mind of a growing adult. Students often view high school as a chore. Keeping up with homework and having a social life can be draining. Students need to consider taking a break for their mental health. A break can be detrimental in changing the way a student may view school. Giving a teen time to reflect and recharge is essential when it comes to learning. A gap year can offer students time to ready themselves for many years of difficult, advanced higher education. A gap year can also give students time to truly decide on their passions. Many teens feel the panic and rush of graduation, believing choosing a future career on the spot will serve them greatly, however, teens are subjected to many forms of peer pressure. Peer pressure can happen when deciding on what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Taking time off can give many undecided students the opportunity to think about what they want to pursue or even if a higher education is right for them. Others believe that you should know what you want to do in life right out of high school but that is not realistic.  We cannot deny that a gap year does not delay a student’s learning habits however, a yearly break can also offer students breathing room to unfold tension and years lost due to high school stress.

High school stress is something many teens will go through in their lives. Mentally, school can take a toll on many students. Despite feeling stressed many students may rush to figure out their course of action. A gap year can relieve stress in the form of travel or leisure. Rushing into college or university classes can harm students mentally. In the chance that a gap year is prohibited, studying abroad can be an excellent way to change the lifestyle of school life. Travelling or studying abroad can teach students different cultures and life experiences. With travelling and experiences new cultures students are bound to meet a ton of new friends and leave old friends behind, this can be beneficial but also disheartening. While losing friendships is a loss, gaining new social experiences can help teens and young adults grow mentally. Life experiences make a person who they are. Without progressing in life and taking it head on, life out of school will be mentally straining and terrifying. 

A gap year can be good or bad for a student. While some may have claimed it is a waste of time and to rush into a career. It is important to enjoy life while you are young. Additionally, it is recommended to go over students’ options with family or a friend. Arguably, a gap year can influence your entire life. A yearly break will help an indecisive student tenfold. While I understand that some people may believe a year off is time wasted a gap year is essential for teens development and growth. A gap year can teach students many of things and offer opportunities A year off school can help financially, educationally, and offer mental stability in the long run.
