There are many reasons why the middle ages got the moniker the Dark ages.

The first one I will be talking about is the Bubonic plague. With trading, the plague came in from infected fleas that were hiding in the rat’s fur. The invaders took advantage of this and cut off trading systems starving everyone inside. They also kept attacking because of how weak the people had gotten. They stole and looted everything, also relentlessly killing anyone who stood in their way.

The second reason is because of religion. There was only one god and that was God. If you were caught worshipping any other type of god at that time you would be executed or tortured in horrible ways like the bloody eagle. The bloody eagle was where they would cut you open and in the end, you would look like a bloody eagle. That's why some families forced their kids to work at churches so God and the church would be in their favor.

Many wars started because of this. Mayors thought that popes weren't allowed to choose who was to be the next leader and that their only power was in church the pope disagreed with them and this started a conflict between the church and military leaders.

With wars, plague, and invasion this was a very difficult time for European people. This is why the middle ages got the nickname the dark ages.
