Popular Culture (Pop Culture) is the recent experience shared by most ordinary people. [formal] The term Popular Culture was implemented around the mid-19th century, referring to the culture of modern-day people rather than the government standards. [Word Origin] People will often find that popular culture lies within the masses of social media, as this helps others see what is most favored at the time. Many people will follow the trail of popular culture to relate to other’s experiences to fit in. [applications] This usually captures the modern era and how the mass of people try to appeal to one another. 

In the mid-19th century, popular culture was created as an expression of freedom. This was formed by interest and daily activities, as people wanted to stray from government issues and structure. During the 1920’s people followed the trends of automobiles, jazz, and movies as popular culture was first introduced. This evolution followed the same path from 1920 to today’s era. People today created what are known as celebrities, or famous people. This is because they have a huge following of ordinary people, who all take an interest in this person. As new things were introduced, people often felt that they wanted to relate with others who were interested. [historical] 

A well-known example would be the artist Elvis Presley in the 1960’s. Elvis had taken most of the popularity in the 60’s. This would create a more defined role of pop culture, as most people at the time knew well who Elvis was. The actions and interests of people not only changed what ordinary people were doing, but business industries as well. Movies would interpret popular culture to target a wider audience for better results, such as new car models, fashion, or trends. This also affected how commercials would target people, such as issues of everyday lives or common dreams shared upon common people. [examples] 

The process of popular culture has varied throughout the years but has now been stable in recent times. In the 1900’s it was meant to escape from standards and structure, and to form a sense of freedom from what the government expected. Popular culture began by building on wanting freedom but had strayed from that and into following others by what is popular. The recent process for popular culture now focuses on which movies, shows, music and fashion are most followed by ordinary people. 

As an expectation, people often assume others know about contemporary trends or what is surfacing on social media. Items and commercials often target what is now popular today and use it to build their brand. The process of popular culture commercials usually starts with something people know or relate to. This could be having a commercial including someone well known around the internet or trying to replicate an everyday environment like households. 

In recent times, the idea of popular culture is more of a competitive term when the overall structure is looked at. Radio stations will broadcast the most popular songs, as artists try to best each other by winning over ordinary people. This also includes things like phones and the network providers. Phone companies want their brand to be seen everywhere, so they try to win over the mass majority with features. Companies attempt to use statistics to see what people want in newer phones, such as better cameras or faster responses. This causes people to think one brand is better than the other, which causes other people to follow along. 

Although a lot of popular culture has maintained itself through the mass majority, it also created an environment where individuals can express themselves how they see fit. The idea of freedom was changed by popular culture and still revolves around the definition of when it was first created.  

The end process of popular culture today allows ordinary people to enjoy newer trends and artists, or have others enjoy older trends from what was popular in their time. This lets older people enjoy what was new and fun back then, while younger generations can influence themselves based on the mass majority and what’s trending in the media. 

Music and shows today reveal that the idea of pop culture is what it was meant to be, as people are still listening and watching new and old content. Radio stations such as “96.7 KISS FM” will play the most popular songs in Austin based on what many people have listened to, or which artist is most known. For people who like various kinds of music, they have radio stations for every type of genre. Channeling through a car radio you can easily find: Classical Music, Alternative Rock, R&B, Video Game Music, Electronic, Gospel, and much more.  

Shows today now target younger audiences; even so, most software and entertainment services continue to keep the older shows and movies for older audiences. Today's popular culture creates a bond for older and younger people as they share interests. Younger people can easily experience popular culture from back then while newer shows still come out based on today’s demand. 

Popular culture allows younger and older people alike to share experiences with others while enjoying what was popular back then, giving them the freedom, they wanted.
