Are you looking to add a new furry companion to your home, but you are not sure what breed will fit you best? I have worked with dogs for about six years and own three dogs. It is important to find the best dog for one’s household to ensure that dog owners are well informed about how to take care of a pet's needs. When it comes to picking out the best pet to match your home and lifestyle, you want to keep a few things in mind. These include grooming, size, temperament, and health of a dog.

Every dog can be trained; however, not every dog acts and learns the same way. Smarter dogs such as the Border Cali, one of the smartest dogs in the world, are very easy to train. Some dogs may also be more skittish or have separation anxiety. This mostly depends on a dog's personality but can be a factor of breeds. For example, the Bichon, a smaller breed, is known to experience social anxiety and fear aggression. It is always best to research any temperament issues a breed is known to have before owning a dog. These are especially important for families with young children, as a dogs tolerance can

Not only should one factor in small children, but also consider the number of household members.   Size is often considered a personal preference; however, there are factors to consider. Larger dogs require regular exercise and plenty of space. For example, a Great Dane or an English Mastiff will not have a good quality of life in a small suburban house. For homes with no yard, it is recommended that one consider smaller breeds like pugs for Chihuahuas. Size can also correlate with other factors, such as health issues.

Due to overbreeding, many dog breeds come with major health issues. German shepherds have been bred to have deformed hips, causing them to develop joint problems when they grow old. Smaller dogs, like the Shih Tzu, often have dental problems that can greatly affect their dietary needs. Another thing to consider when looking at dog breeds is heartworm, a prevalent and serious disease. For people who want a dog with fewer health issues, it is recommended to consider mixed breeds or mutts.

Fluffy and soft coats may seem desirable; however, when considering the grooming hassle of a fluffy dog, some people may change their minds. Every dog needs a bath every month; however, some breeds require regular brushing and trimming. Without regular brushing, a dog can form matting in the hair, which is a serious problem that causes severe discomfort and even injury to a dog. If hair mats become too serious, a dog will need to be shaved.

Hair matting is especially serious for double-coated dogs, as they have a special coat that keeps them warm and cool. If this double-coat is shaved, the dog will lose its ability to regulate body temperature, as well as causing patchy hair growth. All dogs shed, but for those who may not want to deal with all the hair, choosing a short hair breed would be suggested. Also, for people who may be allergic to dogs, there are still options. Many dog breeds are hypoallergenic meaning they cause fewer or no allergy symptoms.

Not only are these things you should consider when looking for a dog but you should also know these things about your dog as they are important to a dog’s health. You can also consider your family size and home size. Knowing these things about a dog is the important responsibility of a dog owner. Be certain of your dog’s needs and consider whether you can provide them.
