Substance abuse, neglect, and addiction will always be a hot topic especially in the world we live in. Many Americans struggle with this including children, parents, and etc. To solve the urge of people to carry legalization of drugs, addiction to these substances has caused a huge increase in violent crimes in the home, at school, and on the street, find more rehab centers, call a helpline, and focus on things like family. Drug abuse is a complex disease that needs enduring and extensive treatment.

Addiction develops when the urge to take a substance hijacks parts of the brain that reward behavior and provides benefits for the body. The major reasons for physical and psychological maltreatment of children within the family often are a parent's feelings of isolation, stress, and Addiction. There are many things that cause Addiction and Neglect such as: Neglect can start with addiction and most people get abused when they are around drug addict people because addicts can’t always control what they do or say, some people simply just wanna try drugs, however some people try drugs and get addicted or they try it because they wanna feel something at that time they feel as if trying a drug will help them which isn't always the case,  also neglect could be caused by lacking support from family members or being around addicted parents or people in general that are under the influence.

Some may think, well how does this affect our community or environment?  Substance abuse leads to addiction which messes up one's personality and actions. It affects children and other adults and can lead to injury, death from interpersonal violence, road accidents if they are under the influence, causes anger issues and can lead to abuse and neglect and bad decision making. If someone in your community is on drugs and is addicted they might not know how to act which can lead them to make careless harmful mistakes without thinking it through. Families are affected when someone within the household is addicted. It causes worry, stress, fearfulness, and so many uncomfortable feelings among the household. Other effects of being addicted may vary to educational difficulties, low self-esteem, depression, and trouble forming and maintaining relationships.

Perspectives will vary depending who you are in the situation or relationship. To a child when a parent hits them or uses harsh verbal words they will know that's not very nice or not very loving towards a child. Yes, it will hurt but other times they see it increasing and they can become fearful to come home or go back to them or this causes many runaways. To a parent (non- drug user) they see that it can hurt the child's feelings but they use it as a punishment. But to a parent ( does drugs) who are careless and loss of feelings they believe its just because the child or spouse or anyone around them started the issue and its there wrongdoing.

We have identified many of the biological and environmental risk factors and are beginning to search for the genetic variations that contribute to the development and progression of the disorder. Scientists use this knowledge to develop effective prevention and treatment approaches that reduce the toll drug use takes on individuals, families, and communities. To someone not included in the family they would report because any child or parent or person in that situation is easily in danger. There are many perspectives that can cause differences in the feelings about neglect and substance abuse.

“Think about it this way. If you saw someone having a heart attack, you'd call an ambulance. If they were depressed, you'd listen to their problems. If they wanted to hurt themselves, you would try  to stop them. You'd be there for them. That's what being a friend is about. But it's hard being a friend to someone who breaks promises, forgets to call, borrows money and never pays it back, and gets "high" instead of spending time with you like they used to.” (Dudley 3). While I read this I say many comparisons. I used to be in a situation where I wanted to help someone I couldn’t because he wasn’t truthful, respectful, faithful, and overall he just didn’t want their help. I wished a part of me could help him but he didn’t want the help. A majority of addicted people refuse the help because they are unfaithful, they don't care, “it's not their issue”, they can’t promise they will try, and they just don’t wanna do it.

Drug abuse is popular in many countries. Billions of dollars are spent preventing drug use, treating addicts, and fighting drug-related crime. Drugs have threatened many communities, their effects can also be copied successfully and some may take longer than others. 35 million people worldwide suffer from drug use disorders while only 1 in 7 people receive treatment. Among Americans aged 12 years and older, 31.9 million are current illegal drug users. 11.7% of Americans 12 and over use illegal drugs. 53 million or 19.4% of people 12 and over have used illegal drugs or misused prescription drugs within the last year. The numbers have slowly increased in the past months which has alarmed people to try stopping them which is costing them a fair share of money to stop the chances of drugs being sold and getting into the hands of someone that should not be in the hands of. “American teen-agers have shown an increased involvement in substance use since 1992. According to a 1997 report by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), 22 percent of eighth-graders, 39 percent of 10th-graders and 42 percent of 12th-graders reported using an illicit drug in the past year. This upward rate of illicit drug use is due primarily to an increase in marijuana use, which increased between 1992 and 1997 by more than 16 percentage points among 12th-graders and by more than 10 percentage points among eighth-graders.” (Winters 1). The numbers of young victims that are using illegal drugs or drugs in general are still increasing to this day there are more reports of underage children getting a hold of these substances which then get a hold of people that should not be in the hands of. However, these things are trying to be contained by stopping the supply and getting rid of substances a little by little each time.

“The juvenile justice system and other agencies that serve children must look beyond foster care and plan for permanent placement for all children who have been abused or neglected. The goal of permanency planning is to expeditiously secure a safe, permanent placement for every maltreated child, either by making it possible for children to stay with or return to their own families in safety or by finding safe adoptive homes for them. The security of being permanently placed within a family promotes a child's healthy emotional and physical development. Conversely, social scientists have documented correlations between child abuse, frequent foster care placements, and later juvenile delinquency.” (Mentabery 3)The goal to help a child that is in foster care is to make sure that they are okay with it. They came from an environment of abuse and addiction and they need to feel safe in the new becoming of their home. Many foster carers provide children with safety and comfort and only wish the best for them. This is a way for children to become free from a not so loving environment.

There are a great number of ways to decrease the amount of drug usage and neglect in the word. For an example: Instead of using harsh words or hands, discipline your children thoughtfully, start support preventions, go to rehab, instead of lashing out control your emotions and deal with your stress, consider the things that are important to you, such as your partner, your kids, your pets, your career, or your health. Instead of going out in anger try to contain yourself and calm yourself so you do not do misleading things that can cause someone or yourself to get hurt. During this time family and friends are the best way to try to recover after your addiction.

Clearly it remains important to remind the public that child abuse, addiction, and neglect are servere threats to a child’s healthy development or an adults and that violence toward children or adults and a continuous lack of attention to their care and supervision are unacceptable and unappealing. The brain's response to addiction changes in a way that he or she continues to live with the bad habits and addictions in spite of understanding its alarming effects. Apart from therapy and medicines, the person requires a lot of love, affection, support, and desire to get over with the addiction which may smooth them into a safe recovery. Addiction leads to many losses and gains of bad habits. You lose yourself while you lose others and hurt others. Solutions to help may be therapy, counciling, family counseling, rebab, and many other solutions to help someone become stable again.
