No, the simultaneous belief in both evolution and Christianity is not achievable. This is mainly due to the fact that the two are such contrasting beliefs. The science that evolution is based on is not in support of the beliefs of Christianity based on the Bible. The Bible is the literary work that many Christians live their lives by and according to. Christians believe that the Bible is “God’s word” and that those who do not believe in it do not qualify as Christians. By believing in science over the Bible one is discrediting their devotion as a Christian.

According to Genesis 1, God created all living things or organisms and when he was done he considered it to be “good.” The science of evolution, however, suggests that his work was not good and that it needed to be improved. Evolution is the changes and adaptations an organism goes through to better accommodate its environment. The argument is that God already made the organisms suited to their environments and, therefore, it clashes with the idea of evolution. “If one takes the creation stories in the Bible literally, one would have to believe that species were created separately from one another, which is in direct conflict with a central tenet of evolution that all of life shares a common ancestor. (“Accepting Evolution Means You Can’t Believe in God”: Atheistic Perceptions of Evolution among College Biology Students, 2020)” An example of this would be the story of the creation of Adam and Eve. Adam is considered to be the first homo sapien to have existed. This is quite in contrast to the belief that homo sapiens evolved from Homo Erectus. Homo Sapiens are modern-day humans and the argument that humans evolved from Homo Erectus and the Homo Erectus species evolved from monkeys doesn’t support the idea that God created the first modern-day humans during his 7-day creation story.

By believing in science instead of what the Bible says, one is not considered Christian. The point of religion is to have faith in things that nobody is really sure of. Science is considered to be the explanation for it all. If one believes in science over having faith in what his or her religion says, he or she cannot be considered a part of that religion. This is because he or she doesn’t have a staple belief in what the Bible says. Christianity is the blind belief in the words of the Bible and by not following it blindly, it is not Christian behavior. “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. (John 12:26)” By following the Bible, Christians are following God and Jesus and upholding their stance of a devoted Christian. “You are my friends if you do what I command you. (John 15:14)” This statement once again supports the idea that Christians are ideally supposed to follow what Jesus and God command. If what they command is to follow the Bible, then Christians should follow that undoubtedly.

Some may argue that Christians can believe in evolution and be loyal to their faith. This is completely untrue. The argument for that claim is that the Bible is not a reliable source of information. While this may be true, the Bible is the religious work that Christians are required to believe in and have faith in since it is “God’s word.” By saying it isn’t reliable or not having faith in its credibility, one is essentially demeaning God’s creations and his credibility, in general. This disbelief would also doubt where humans originate as well. Humans were said to have been created in God’s image. By saying that that is untrue and that humans evolved from Homo Erectus, one is essentially saying that humans were created in the image of apes, not in God’s image. This is supported by the Bible, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)” This further supports the idea of humans being created through God’s hand rather than through the evolution of other organisms.

To conclude, Christians cannot believe in both evolution and their faith. This is strongly due to the contrasts between the Bible and the science of evolution. Each is not in support of the other and, therefore, cannot exist simultaneously in the beliefs of a Christian. An example of this would be the evolution of human beings. According to evolution, modern-day humans evolved from Homo Erectus and Homo Erectus evolved from monkeys. In contrast, the modern-day human was created by God and in the image of God, also known as Adam and Eve. The humans that exist now are all considered to be the descendants of Adam and Eve. The two ideas: evolution and the Bible, clash and, therefore, cannot both be supported by any Christian.
