John Smith was a true "badass." Growing up in England as a son of a poor farmer he had nothing of royalty, but that did not stop Smith making a name for himself. Mr. Smith was restless on the farm he wanted to do something more with his life. When John's father passed away, he went out exploring. Smith got involved with the military and even went to the Netherlands to become a solider around the age of sixteen. John was involved with the crusades and while fighting the Ottoman empire he singles handily beheaded three Turkish soldiers in a row. Now if that does not tell you he is a "badass" right there. During the crusades he was enslaved by a Turkish woman that was going to force him to marry her, but nevertheless he got out.
In England, there was a group of higher ups that wanted to sponsor a Jamestown experiment. This project was to establish a new colony at the new world. Smith wanting to get involved had gained respect from some of the sponsors. Unfortunately, Smith was more of a hot head and would restore to violence quickly. While on the ship over to Jamestown John got himself in trouble with one too many of the passengers and ended up in chains. Once the ship arrived in Jamestown, they opened the charter to find out that the sponsors wanted John Smith in charge. Therefore, they had to release Mr. Smith from "ship jail." John Smith led by example; since Jamestown was nothing but forest when they got there the colony had to start from scratch. The ship arrived in Jamestown a little too late in the season to be able to get a good spring plant in so during the first winter around half of the colony died from starvation. John Smith took upon himself to build everyone a shelter, so they had some sort of protection and built his shelter last. Even though Smith could be this great man he had is faults too. He took a small group of men to do explore and they came across a group of 200 hostile Indians. These Indians were ready to kill them, but John Smith had his guns with him and was able to get way from the Indians. During this fight Smith used his Indian guide as a human shield, not his most admirable time. During this time of him creating the colony he would do anything to make it work. Smith on multiple occasion choose violence so the people would not get back on the ship and leave.
During John Smiths time in Jamestown, he got taken captured by the Indians. John was with the Indians for about a month not knowing if he was going to be killed or not. He would barter back and forth with them with his gadgets that he had. In a sense the Indians and Smith became friends getting to know one another. It became the day that John was going to get killed and Pocahontas saves him from being killed. The king says he will make them all their gadgets and other barging items.
I said John Smith as the badass of early American literature for many reasons. John Smith would not let anyone else opinion change him accomplishing his goals. Smith was also a great leader in many ways: one he did not take no for an answer, two he led everything by example good or bad and three he never backed down from a fight. John Smith was raised as a poor farmer and turned himself into a piece of history all by him being a total "badass."
