Who is Natalia and how has she changed the ballet world? Natalia Osipova is a Russian dancer. She changed the hearts of many with her hypnotizing movement and awe-inspiring motion. Natalia has been an inspiration to people all over the world. Natalia has starred in famous ballets such as The Nutcracker, Gisselle, Romeo and Juliet, and many more. 

Natalia Petrova Osipova was born May 18 1986 in Moscow, Russia. (wiki) Even as a child she was encouraged to follow the artistic lifestyle. In Conversations with Natalia Osipova, she says, “As far as I remember I was very young, about five years old and it all began when I was sent to a dance class called the House of Culture in Russia”. Even as a young dancer she was insanely talented. She trained at the Moscow State Academy of Choreography when she was eighteen. Osipova joined the Bolshoi ballet company when she finished her training. (Wikipedia) Natalia decided to be a gymnast as a child, though she had to pursue ballet because of a back problem. Wikipedia also says that in 2005 Osipova danced in Alexei Fadeyechev’s production of Don Quixote as the role of Kitri. In the summer of 2005, Natalia participated in a Moscow International Ballet Competition. (For Ballet Lovers Only). Javier C. Hernández said, “She is a renowned ballerina known for dazzling technique and charismatic portraits in title roles like “Gisselle”.  In 2010 Osipova became the principal dancer for the Bolshoi Ballet, She left the next year because it was limiting her “artistic freedom”. After she resigned from Bolshoi, she joined the American Ballet Theatre. She was a guest at the Metropolitan Opera house. (Wikipedia) some of the dances she was in at the Met were Romeo and Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, and Don Quixote. Right before her performance of The Sleeping Beauty, Osipova was robbed in NYC, thankfully only losing a pair of pointe shoes and a small hammer to shape them. She joined the Royal Ballet as a principal dancer in April of 2013. She joined the royal ballet because they allowed much more diversity in her dancing. Some people had a hard time with Natalia leaving Bolshoi and they accused her of lying, pretending like she was sick, and Vladimir Kekhman, artistic director at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, stated that she “lied to two theaters, you and me personally,” and “disrespect toward the audience.” (Javier C. Hernández) he also said that she “has the skills of a con artist”. The royal ballet never addressed the matter publicly. After she left the Bolshoi theatre she was no longer welcome there. 

She has many fans who describe her as “a raven-haired beauty boasting the energy of an atomic power plant”. Her fans were very disappointed when they discovered she will not be performing in St. Petersburg. Many of her followers believe her even though there has been controversy, especially from the Russian ballet companies that she has worked for. (Javier C. Hernández)

Osipova competed in the Grand Prix at Prix de Luxembourg international ballet competition in 2003. In 2005 she got 3rd place at the Moscow Ballet competition. She received a prize from the Ballet Magazine Soul of Dance in the category of rising star 2007. In 2008 she was given the Leonide Massine award in the category of the significance of talent. Also in 2008, the international dance association awarded her Prix Benois de la Danse Prize. In her performances of La Sylphide, The Flames of Paris, Le Corsaire, and Giselle. She also got the Richard Sherrington award and in her performance in the Upper Room, she was given the golden mask award also in 2008. The next year she got the golden mask award again for her performance La Sylphide. She received the award for the best duet as well. She was named best female dancer from the UK national dance awards in 2007, 2010, and 2014. (Wikipedia)

When Natalia was young she trained at the Moscow State Academy of Choreography. There, she was taught by director Marina Leonova. From there she joined Bolshoi. Her teacher at the Bolshoi Theatre was Marina Kondratievea. (American Ballet Theatre)

This is only a fraction of all of the dances she’s done.

After all the research done, after years of training, nothing and no one can truly match up to her talent. She has inspired many people around the world with her dancing. Her performance with the Bolshoi Theatre started her path to the dance world, this helped her get into American Ballet Theatre and then after that the Royal Ballet which is her current dance company. She is a beautiful, talented, graceful, insanely artistic dancer. Natalia has danced her way into all of her fans’ and followers' hearts. She is known for her beautiful variation of Giselle and Swan Lake. Natalia Osipova has inspired me and many others to be better dancers.
