Essay Sample about Universal Healthcare: A Better Way of Living

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of an injury? Many would think of a hospital. When an injury occurs in the United States, the best bet is that you go to the hospital to get treated. It is helpful and everyone in the world deserves it if not needs it. While some are lucky enough to be able to afford healthcare in a hospital, others are less fortunate. A vital piece of information, healthcare here in the United States isn’t free! Isn’t that absurd? Recently, a controversial topic has started to arise, whether healthcare in the United States of America should be free or not. While the government is in debt and cannot pay healthcare workers, healthcare in the United States should be free because almost every country in the world has free healthcare, not everyone can afford it even though it is a necessity in life, and Japan, another country in debt, manages to have universal healthcare. 

Firstly, every country, except for 43, has free healthcare, also known as universal healthcare (Which Countries Offer). The surprising part is that the United States is not included in the countries that have universal healthcare. Rwanda is a country in Africa that has universal healthcare, and Ghana is another country in Africa that is striving to get free health care. The bizarre part is that these countries are underdeveloped and lots of their citizens live in poverty. What is stopping the United States? Is it an income problem? It is hard to believe that it is because the US government has collected over 4 trillion dollars in taxes alone in 2021 (The Government Collected). I can only imagine how much they will get in the upcoming years.  With over 150 million taxpayers in the country, I am sure that there is plenty to pay health professionals. To add on, the United States is the second richest country in the world. The amount of money it has is over three times the amount the third richest country in the world has, Germany, which has fourteen trillion dollars. Furthermore, China, the most populated country in the world with 1.5 billion citizens has managed to gain universal health care for the majority of its nation (“Guide to Health”). If tons of countries, from underdeveloped countries to overpopulated countries can have free healthcare, then the United States should also be able to do it. 

Second, hospital rooms are expensive. A three-day vacation in a hospital room may sound nice, but when you find out the bill is $10,000 a day, you’re not going to be enjoying your stay (“Health Coverage Protects”). It would take a few months for someone to make that money. A little over 70 percent of Americans call having money problems and feeling stressed (“The Stress of Money”). Healthcare fees are just adding to the stress. It has always been believed that the United States is the country to start a new life. It seems to be that it is the complete opposite.        

Finally, a friend of mine, Abram Lopez, was having a conversation with me, and we discussed whether healthcare should be free or not. He contradicted the idea because the United States of America is in a lot of debt and does not have enough money to pay the healthcare workers. That is interesting because Japan is the country with the most debt by GDP (gross domestic product), and the country with 128 million residents. Yet, with all these limitations, Japan has managed to get passed the barrier and provide free healthcare for all of its citizens. Sure, Japan does not have the most debt in the world. The United States does, with 30 trillion dollars (U.S. Nation Debt). Even though it may seem like a lot of money, which it is, the government also collects a lot of money from its citizens. They have to pay income tax, sales, tax, payroll tax, etc. With the amount of money they are getting, they can pay off the debt the country has and still be able to pay the healthcare workers. The amount of money the government has to pay the healthcare workers is considered “a few pennies” to them. 

To sum up, there is absolutely no reason as to why the United States does not already have free healthcare. It embraces a healthy and powerful workspace. Hospitals are not something that can easily pay for just out of your pocket. They take days and months of hard work to get the money to pay for healthcare. The United States has enough money and they are hogging it. Let’s do something about this, demand free healthcare, and everyone will be happy!
