Virtual Reality is simultaneously one of the most fascinating and terrifying inventions by man. Technology is reaching points that were widely considered fiction by many at times. VR is commonly thought to be inaccessible by some, and that it may just be used for games or entertainment. However, VR has a vast selection of things to offer. I’ll be explaining what VR is and some misconceptions of its use, why it’s useful, and the foreseeable future it holds. 

First off,  Virtual Reality is a computer-created simulated environment. VR puts the consumer into a 3D environment. Not to be confused with Augmented Reality which is based on manipulations of real-world environments. VR is completely computer-oriented and doesn’t involve real environments, but rather simulations of real or fictional environments. Entertainment wise, it puts the user into an interactive world completely fictional and designed by a developer. It makes them a part of the world rather than staring at a monitor or tv and pressing buttons. This simulated world is completely controlled by the user and only limited by the developer’s creation. 

VR has plenty of misconceptions, such as its accessibility, and its cost. Nonetheless, many misconceptions are incorrect. The accessibility of headsets is more open than some expect. VR headsets can be bought for a fairly reasonable price as low as $300. Many also think that they need an expensive computer to run it, but headsets such as the Oculus Quest offer a wireless connection without the need for computers. One of the biggest misunderstandings is that the headsets are only used for entertainment. However, it is used for a vast variety of other things, such as job training, education, and the military. Additionally many think that it may decrease social interaction, and while physically that is true. A virtual interaction in games could be viable because it has them become more socially interactive since they may feel more open. 

Many complex jobs have picked up VR as a way to train, with literal hands-on training without risk. For example, health care industries have picked up VR as a means of training, and rehabilitation. MindMaze, a European company has adapted Virtual Reality into its treatment for victims of strokes and brain injuries. As explained earlier, even militaries use Virtual Reality. They may use it to train for a specific operation or to understand equipment without having the risk of damaging it. Nonetheless, even with its extensive use outside of gaming, it’s still one of the most popular activities among VR users. Games have evolved rapidly from 2D dimensions on a screen to a completely 3D and fully interactive game. For example, a game called “Half-Life Alyx” utilized an almost completely interactive 3D world with little to no limits to what the user can do. Games like this will only keep evolving and so will the other uses outside of gaming as the technology becomes more mainstream. 

The future of VR has many worried, as it could be concerning how it could be used with more advanced technology. It’s thought that someday VR could be put into something as small as a pair of glasses. VR in the future could be used as a means of getting away from the real world, hence becoming an addiction as social media has to some. And while this already happens with social media, games, and other virtual activities it would be doubly more precarious because not only does this give you an option to be a new person, but it gives you the ability to interactively live that person. The movie “Ready Player One” Shows a great example of how this technology could be used in the future. You may end up living your job in a virtually created environment or instead of visiting places, it could be replaced by a realistic replica. Or even worse you become a completely new identity split between the real world and the virtual. Thankfully we are far from this becoming a reality as VR isn’t mainstream outside of video games yet. However even though its future could be grim, it could also become astonishingly positive. It could open new gateways to education and create more interactive and enjoyable experiences to better help people learn while enjoying it. Or experience events virtually that already happened or are yet to happen, such as a first-person simulated collision of galaxies. The uses of VR are just being discovered and only stretch as far as the imagination, and as technology increases so will the capabilities of these devices. 

So yes, while the future of VR is unknown and frightening. It could be wondrous and revolutionary. It has the ability to aid scientific studies, victims with brain injuries, all the way to being used in the military. VR not only has achieved what was considered non-fiction. It’s also become much more and has the ability to become more significant than imagined.
