The coronavirus pandemic was a shock to the world and changed life as we knew it. When the virus spread, businesses shut down and social distancing became the new golden rule. Remote work was highly sought after during this time period and many people, myself included, obtained a position in the field of remote work. Telework is convenient and easy, however the downside is the lack of security. Many who were new to telework were unsure of proper security measures. In the end nearly 81% of global organizations experienced an increase of cyber-attacks during the coronavirus pandemic according to a study performed McAfee (mcafee). Proper security is no laughing matter and should be taken seriously. One effective solution to improve cybersecurity in remote work for newcomers in the telework industry is through a Virtual Private Network also referred to as a VPN.

You are probably asking yourself, what is a VPN? A VPN is a security measure that creates an encrypted tunnel from your device to a remote server and is typically used on public Internet (cybernews). But why would you need a VPN when doing remote work, especially when working from home? Afterall, most internet providers have firewalls and other forms protection available through their services. Well, ESET specialist Jake Moore says VPNs are necessary applications for remote workers (computer weekly). VPNs add an additional layer of protection and provide secure remote access for home workers (tech target computer weekly). Additionally, VPNs allow remote employees to access their office network from anywhere that has access to the internet (nstec).

When I started my remote job working for a phone company, I realized the importance of added security. The telework job I had honestly scared me a bit. If data leaks occurred from my computer, I could be held liable for monetary damages and lose my job. It was a concern that was mind for quite some time. I handled vital personal information like bank accounts, social security numbers and home addresses on the daily. Installing a VPN provided a sense of comfort for myself because I had additional protection to ensure my internet traffic could not be tracked as easily and made sure data that I accessed remained encrypted.

The original surge of remote work left many organizations and individuals wondering how they could navigate the complexity of security in telework. So far, I have never experienced any issues using VPNs nor have I had any data leaks. Installing a VPN may not work for every person performing telework. However, for me, having a VPN is peace of mind. If I need to access my work email on public internet, I know I can rely on a VPNs to protect myself and the information I am accessing. In conclusion, I would say that VPNs are an excellent way to improve cybersecurity for remote workers and those new to telework should try it to see if it is right for them.
