“How many have to die before we will give up these dangerous toys?”- Stephen King. BANG! Just one shot. One pull of the trigger. That’s all it takes to end someone’s life. To take the life of another. Imagine being the person that the gun is pointing at. You would be scared, right? What if you were told that there was a way to prevent that? That there was a way to spare your children, your spouses, and yourselves the harm of firearms. There is one big thing that is being debated- gun control. Gun control keeps the obtainment of firearms (e.g. handguns) limited. It keeps people who should not and do not need guns from getting them. To be more specific it provides bans and requires permits on guns. It should be noted that gun control has a positive impact on the United States because it can help prevent firearm suicides as well as reducing robbery and death rates from gun-related activities.

To start, gun laws help prevent gun death and firearm suicide. According to the text, “Three types of laws could reduce gun deaths by more than 10%”, the author writes, “Elinore Kaufman, a surgeon and public health policy analyst at the University of Pennsylvania… But laws that limit access to guns for children, she says, could help prevent firearm suicides by making it harder for everyone—not just children—to access guns in the first place.” This shows an expert opinion on the fact that people are getting hold of firearms, resulting in many deaths. If there were gun laws put in place, it could prevent that from happening. It also further explains how gun laws not only impact children positively by stopping them from getting a hold of guns but also make it harder for people in general to get guns. Understandably, more children and people would be better off without the excessive amount of guns lying around. Furthermore, if fewer people had guns, fewer people would get hurt.

That is not all! Putting bans on gun ownership for criminals reduces robbery and other gun-related crimes. In the article, “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime”, the author explains, “Proactive arrests (made by police officers on patrols in gun‐crime hot spots, using traffic enforcement and field interrogations) for carrying concealed weapons substantially reduced gun crimes in Kansas City in the mid‐1990s.” This shows that once there are stricter policies enforced, there can be increasingly effective impacts on that area in which those policies are enforced. In this case, it shows how Kansas City “substantially reduced” gun-related crimes just by stopping people from hiding concealed weapons. So, if that were to work, then putting bans on gun ownership for criminals from having guns would ultimately decrease other gun crimes in other places as well. In due time, people will realize that gun crimes do happen, and if there were bans put down against criminal usage of guns, then there could be a significant decrease in all crimes.

Despite knowing this information, not everybody agrees on this topic. Some people are against gun laws because they simply believe that gun laws are unconstitutional. Although this may be true to an extent, what this claim does not consider is that gun laws can be constitutional because the Second Amendment does not accept all claims for holding guns- like possession of concealed guns. Judge William Fletcher wrote for the full-court majority (7-4 decision): “The right of the general public to carry a concealed firearm in public is not, and never has been, protected by the Second Amendment,” That means that firearms were never allowed in the first place to be concealed. Furthermore, that would mean that putting in gun laws to reduce concealed carry to only certain people or putting in stricter jurisdiction. As the world is evolving and people are changing, more gun laws should be put in place to keep the country in order. This would protect many people and children from firearm calamities. It would also further reduce robberies and other gun-related crimes. In the end, it can be done without impeding the constitution’s amendments. And if all’s well that ends well, then there shouldn’t be a problem. It could be an answer seeing now that it reduces gun violence in multiple ways.
