A want for change in the grading system shouldn’t be viewed as people wanting school to be easier, but as a way for students to learn genuinely and not have the unnecessary stress of having straight A’s. The current system most schools use is negatively impacting the opportunities of many students. This can happen for many reasons, from burnout or even a lack of faith in a student’s abilities. Therefore, the grading system should be reevaluated to produce more positive results in the academic environment.

Something that needs to be paid attention to is cheating. Students in public school can copy homework and look at another student’s answers during a test. Even online students can cheat with Google (oh, the wonders of copy and paste). According to a study done at Stanford University, 86% of high school students reported cheating at some point in their academic career. Considering how simple it can be to seem smart on paper, a basic letter grade system isn’t beneficial for judging an actual grasp of someone’s knowledge.

Students are taught from the beginning of their academic career that, in order to succeed in life, you must be well educated, make good grades, and have a high GPA. This is an immense amount of pressure for someone of any age, let alone children and teens who are still developing. The stress and competition of the current academic environment is incredibly detrimental to students who could be doing their best.

Some people may say that traditional grades are necessary to judge a student’s knowledge on a subject. “Students who are challenged in these courses are able to work hard to obtain information that will be needed in future education.” (Cassio, 1). However, this is not the case, because what good does it do when they don’t get any second chances to actually learn the material they got a bad grade on? For example, several schools don’t allow a student to make a zero on an assignment, and instead give them the option to retake it until they pass. By making it possible to gain a better understanding of the material, the student can genuinely learn.

Traditional grading has been the standard for a long time, but change and innovation can be positive. By putting time and effort into a more accepting and beneficial grading system, students could be happier and more confident in their skills. Opportunities would be open to, not just the top percentage of students, but to students who are willing to put effort into their education.
