Books have the power to let us travel in time, learn from the past, and plan a better future. When we read a good book, we enter a world of imagination where we walk miles in the author’s or character’s shoes. The stories change our points of view, shape our cultures, give us the courage to go after our dreams, and explore endless possibilities.

A great book plays a vital role in the enlargement of our beings. It lets us see the world through someone else’s eyes and feel with someone else’s heart, takes us in a world and time where we cannot go to and experience things we cannot experience ourselves. Most of what we believe now came from fiction – our ideas of marriage, class, gender, politics, religion, and many other ideologies were modified in the 18th and early 19th centuries and rewritten in the pages of the books that were ahead of their time. One of the books written in the early 19th century that had a great impact on me was “Jane Eyre” written by Charlotte Brontë.

The main themes of “Jane Eyre” are the importance of principles, religious beliefs, social hierarchy, and the pursuit of true love. It tells the journey of an abused orphan girl who grows up to be strong and independent. Jane Eyre brings thought-provoking questions into light and makes us wonder about the complexities of values systems and beliefs, and how they all affect our choices in life. It shows us a clear picture of our struggles with morals, values, and spiritual development.

Jane is a great character. She loves education, books and despite having nothing to her name she manages to make her way in this world. Eyre dares to go out there and make a life for herself and decide which path she wants to follow.  She is assertive in many ways – she’s not afraid to speak the truth against powerful people. She doesn’t compromise on her morals and values even though we see her struggle against them. Her character is not a saint, it’s a character that knows what it’s capable of after seeing the ugliness in people, but still chooses to be good and make decisions based on her morals and values. Whenever I face hard times or struggle with morals, I always take strength from her character.

Jane Eyre taught me valuable lessons that helped me become who I am today. It taught me that no matter what your circumstances are, you have the power to change them. Education can make you self-supporting.  You don’t have to become a monster when people around you treat you like one, choose kindness instead. Always speak the truth, even if it means going against powerful people. Love unconditionally but not at the expense of your morals and self-respect. Have the courage to go after your dreams. The lessons of this book are timeless. It’s one of the reasons why Jane Eyre stayed relevant after so many years.
