Essay Sample on Land Pollution

The act of land pollution is a dreadful social justice issue. It deserves more recognition from our world. More than two hundred thousand trees are killed each month from this horrible cause. New Oil spills from tankers transporting oil to destinations, or the Ozone hole that continues to grow from the millions of cars burning fossil fuel around the world.  Hearing these things makes me think that our world needs to come together and work as a team. Us humans only have planet earth for now or even forever, and it is time to make a stance and create awareness about this problem.

The fact remains that pollution is hard to avoid in current times. Starting off with a well known environmentalist in Kenya Nzambi Matee. She saw how much waste was being produced in her city and spent time trying to figure out how she can reuse it. After sometime she started a company called Gjenge Makers.This company of hers creates bricks out of plastic waste that is in the area. The bricks are provided to schools, hospitals and her hometown to create shelters. Now to reach out to another activist from nine thousand km away, Daniel Webb from the UK. His work of art is called Everyday Plastic and is now an attraction in his hometown. His story is that he took a stroll along the river and noticed all the garbage that was washing up on the shore. He wanted to create awareness about the problem and chose the arts as the best way. Now it's visited frequently by hundreds of people and each time highlights the problem. At the moment we have observed just two individuals who showed that anyone can make a difference to tackle this ever growing global pollution problem.These two activists have shown some impressive ways on how they took on land pollution.

There is no doubt that currently we need to be more aware of land pollution and are finding new ways of tackling it much more effectively. However, in the past we simply dumped our garbage in landfills that were not as big and oceans, which has resulted in a floating plastic area the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean. This shows how careless us humans are to this world. Even today we are still addicted to polymer and using excessive packaging.More common plastic wastage is plastic bags from grocery stores,plastic straws and plastic water bottles.This leads to 345 million tonnes of plastic being dumped in landfills every year.These landfills and ocean waste is the main problem in our world.By continuing this process we could be damaging a lot more of the environment than we think.

Although the above examples sound terrible, not all is loss. We are slowly but certainly repairing our wasteful ways.There are many examples around the world of ways pollution is being tackled. In Singapore they are now collecting and burning all trash at very high temperatures and using special filters that result in zero pollution in the air. The burning is used to generate electricity to power the city.(This was mentioned in my slideshow).This of course requires a lot of money and energy, but there are many cheaper examples like reforestation,creating sandals out of used tires, proper food disposal and last but not least steadily staying away from non-biodegradable Items.

Acting together is what can help prevent further harm to this earth of ours and create a cleaner future.Overall, even if cleaning up and controlling pollution seems like a daunting task, if we all cooperate and “think globally but act locally” our pollution problems can be an issue of the past.-Patrick Geddes.
