The differences in legal and illegal immigrants are not just a piece of paper or a green card.  It is intent and purpose. Legal immigration is contributive and beneficial to the economy. Legal immigrants come to the United States seeking education, and a better life. “Moreover, there is considerable heterogeneity among immigrant groups - refugees from war torn countries leave their homeland for very different reasons than economically motivated immigrants” Robert J. Sampson wrote in his pro- immigration article, titled, “Immigration and America’s Urban Revival”, appearing in the summer of 2015 issue of the American prospect Magazine. Urging caution upon the issue. And, although immigration has its benefits to American life, the excessive rise in illegal immigration is causing harm to this country. However, it is true that legal immigration and the diversity it brings to the US can be a good thing, better control of illegal immigration is needed to control the threat of overpopulation, stop the destruction of farmland and prevent water shortages.

Immigration is directly tied to the increasing demand of expansion in urban cities.  “Due to immigration both legal and illegal, combined with the declining birthrate among native-born Americans, 80 percent of population growth in the United States today is from the immigrant population”. Author Kenny, Jack mentions in his article “Immigration: How we got there from here”. published by The New American. The expansion of these urban cities calls for the destruction of thousands of acreages of essential farmland every year. Potentially harming wildlife and the future of American agriculture. There are many Homes that sit vacant year after year, yet more homes are built, more roads are constructed and more farmland is lost. The loss of farmland is a serious cause of concern. With the ongoing effects of climate change causing droughts, famine and destruction of harvests, losing prime agricultural land space in the name of expansion will result in food shortages nationwide.  Until plants are then harvested more unnaturally, which will then reverse all previous efforts of lowering American carbon emissions thus far, and create a much bigger problem. Not only for Americans, But for the world. Expansion of urban cities due to overpopulation, and illegal immigration is killing American wildlife, important fragile ecosystems and destroying prime farmland, issues that must be addressed before it is too late.

Lastly, the balance of distribution and consumption of America’s natural resources, such as the water supply, face serious consequence if the issue is not addressed. Most illegal immigrants will not contribute to consensus data. Without the ability to monitor and control the influx of new residents per year, the rate of consumption will increase, and the amount of available resources will begin depleting, rapidly. The dangers of inaccurate and out of date consensus data, are that members are unable to predict the rate of which population growth and the consumption ratio, increases or decreases every year. This leads to unanticipated water shortages in communities and cities across the country, much faster than what has been predicted.  In other words, without making some serious changes to the way illegal immigration is controlled, the United States will see the loss of its resources, at a rapid rate.

An argument in favor of immigration might say Diversity is a benefit to American culture, to which is true. Diversity helps to end racism, by being rid of the fear of the unknown, which all humans have as a survival instinct.  Diversity also enhances the way of life by making people feel unique and special in their differences. Teaching younger generations empathy and acceptance through diversity will create a peaceful and happy community for generations to come. However, without addressing the immigration issue America is currently facing, the possibility of this coming to fruition is minuscule to nonexistent.

Therefore, the potentially devastating environmental hazards caused by increasing immigration should be addressed before the country sees catastrophic outcomes.
