Dear eminent leaders of the world, I know that I may not be the finest speaker you have ever heard, but I stand before you today asking for a short amount of your time not only to raise awareness on a topic that could have deleterious effects on the current generation, but could ruin the lives of your children and your upcoming generations, this is not only a threat to your individual countries, but a threat to humanity. Nuclear weapons.

You, myself and anyone else has bound to have heard of the term “nuclear weapons”. The devastating effects of these monstrous weapons have been demonstrated before in places such as Hiroshima and Nagasaki where the nuclear bombs which had been detonated over 70 years ago, still to this date, have caused many innocent lives to suffer. Can you imagine yourself in that position? Can you imagine a world where you would have to suffer daily due to a measly conflict that could have been totally avoided? Not only would the initial explosion of the bomb liquidate anything within a 2-mile radius but the after effects would be detrimental including thermal radiation which is capable of delivering third degree burns all over the body. How would you feel? Now imagine a world where you would be able to resort to a peaceful manner to resolve any conflict, where there would be no need for mass bloodshed in the millions, the ideal utopia. What is stopping you from making a change within your country?

Throughout history, us humans have been resorting to violence to settle matters all the way from 1066, The Battle of Hastings, up to the most recent event, Russia invading Ukraine, not only through this do countless numbers of families lose their children, siblings, parents, but governments and economies are disastrously affected, take for example Germany after WWII, due to the immense bombings of factories industrial outputs were down by a third and the countries’s housing stock was reduced by 20%. To put this into perspective, this would be equivalent to the UK losing 2 billion pounds if its trade decreased just by 20%. Not only would this cause extreme poverty,  but the pound would also become worth nothing ; it would take a minimum of 10 years to recover. Picture if you were alive during WWII, how would you feel, now imagine the same thing but a thousand times worse. Not only do nuclear bombs do significantly more damage on impact, but their after affects can totally dissipate a whole country, you don’t want that country to be yours, right? Knowing you all possess nuclear weapons, How could you trust just a push of a button? Could you even trust yourself?

Moreover, I understand that some people may argue that nuclear weapons are imperative for a countries' defence and that they must be kept in order to ensure a countries' survival as if one country does not possess nuclear weapons it can easily be threatened and challenged by another country however, if at any point a nuclear bomb is detonated, I can guarantee you there will be MAD (mutually assured destruction) therefore, what is the point? Furthermore, not only are tensions rising during these times, the power and size of these bombs are also increasing. The largest nuclear bomb, The Tsar Bomb, which is ironically owned by the Russians, has been estimated to be roughly 57 megatons more powerful than the atomic bomb which had been dropped on Hiroshima. 57 Megatons! An expert source states that only around 100 of these Tsar Bombs would be needed to totally wipe out the human race, leaving no trail behind whatsoever.

The final calling for humanity has arrived. If we do not change our ways not only individually but globally, the chances of this race surviving are slim to none. Nevertheless, it does not mean it is too late. Why are we on the path to destroying the same race that our ancestors put their blood, sweat and tears into preserving? I understand that reversing these actions will not be a walk in the park but together, we can do it!
