When addressing global health, many philosophical views are either incredibly optimistic yet unrealistic or only focus on the negative aspects of modern global health. While there have been advancements in the health realm through increased research, many health complications in underdeveloped countries are ignored. Multiple factors influence the global health struggle, such as environmental factors and inappropriate behaviors, and all have to be recognized when discussing how to improve global health. A realistic, yet optimistic view on global health is needed, recognizing the strengths and possibilities in global health while being aware that there are limitations from those who do not want to engage in this constantly changing field.

Nutrition should be the priority in global health as malnutrition is one of the leading causes of death in underdeveloped countries while obesity is causing health complications in wealthier territories. Food is wasted in the countries with plentiful amounts instead of giving to these poorer countries. This inappropriate behavior has to end, transporting this wasted food to those in need. Hunger would slowly start to be eliminated through a multiple-year process of transferring resources, saving the lives of millions who would have died of starvation. This would help to lower the number of malnourished individuals globally, which is currently at 690 million.1 While eliminating world hunger would take decades and many resources to allow this constant food distribution, it would give more people a chance for survival. In countries where obesity is on the rise, food choices also have to change. These governments should be working with farms to make healthy produce equally affordable and available to fast food. It is not realistic to remove all unhealthy food options; however, making healthy food cost the same and be as prevalent as the unhealthy alternatives would help to give people the chance to make better choices. 650 million people are obese, and by making these health-conscious choices more available, this number would decrease.2 The complete change of food behaviors is not realistic, but these changes would create a healthier world population.

Climate change needs to be focused on global health. Climate change has already begun and the impact has already had irreversible effects with the temperature of Earth rising each year.3 While it is not possible to change these environmental impacts, protecting the planet from further damage is another important task to tackle as environmental conditions correlate with health. The rise in pollution has led to unsafe drinking water that destroys gastrointestinal functions, increased temperatures lead to difficulties breathing, and the rising water levels are destroying the territories people live in.4 Companies need to change their packaging to create fewer pollutants, limiting the waste that ends up piling into landfills. The use of fossil fuels has to decrease while other renewable energy sources should be generated, allowing the Earth to replenish the natural materials. While these changes will take time and many would not be willing to make switches from their current lifestyles, a community of people working towards slowing down climate change would benefit the world.

It does not seem likely the food situation would completely be resolved for both the malnourished and obese. It also does not seem possible to fully switch everyone to relying on renewable energy and give up their previous habits. However, people could realize that health issues in other countries are directly impacting their lives and how these changes would have a positive impact on the global health system. Fewer deaths would occur due to starvation and obesity while the environment would be able to continue to provide resources for survival. A realistic, yet optimistic, approach to global health needs to be held, pushing for positive changes while understanding that these adjustments take time and will not be immediate solutions to all of the world’s problems.
