As human being we need three essential things to survive: food, water and shelter. What about the value of nurture? As humans the love and nurture we receive is vital for our mental health and emotional well-being. Interpersonal relationships are form many of the relationships we have with coworkers, family members, and even our friends. These relationships build our communication skills and confidence; also, these relationships shape our individual personalities. Romantic relationships are considered interpersonal relationships, and although the love we receive from family and friends is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, many studies have shown that positive romantic relationships encourage personal growth, decrease stress and increase quality of life.  

Many people thrive on their own, and although there are many fish in the sea, some people do not find their partner fish in life, or they are not eager enough to find their life partner due to the fact they are content with the company of themselves and family. However, since there is so much to gain from a relationship, something you lose when not wanting to seek for a significant other, is the lessons you learn from the trials and tribulations of dating. “Romantic relationships and experiences are important sources of emotional bonding and contribute to the development a positive self-concept and greater social interrogation…and it's been described to contribute to people’s mental health and physical health therefore to their well-being” (Gomez-Lopez, Viejo, Ortega-Ruiz 1). This quote expresses romantic relationships do more than just teach us love. The experiences that we learn through the ups and downs that a relationship can bring us, can also help uncover how we perceive ourselves and grace us with lessons for future stages in our lives. These lessons taught from old relationships can help better new ones. The significance of emotional bonding plays an important role as well, emotional bonding being a shared experience, of trauma or belief. These experiences you have in common with another, could be ones from a past relationship. Although these experiences could leave a negative memory and bad for our mental health, that could just be a small hurdle for a long-term healthy relationship. 

When we encounter these experiences, we are mostly undergoing these events around the same time in our lives. There are stages in our lives where our brain absorbs different things, like when we’re around the age of two and we say what we hear others saying, or when we’re in our teen years and we want to wear what others are wearing to be “cool”. However, a time where our brain grasps on to what we want in a relationship is in our adolescence’s years. “By middle adolescence, most boys and girls have been involved in at least one romantic relationship, providing them with a scenario characterized by greater intimacy, support, and importance as their age advances” (Gomez-Lopez, Viejo, Ortega-Ruiz). The author of this article voices the importance these intimate relationships have on our brain. The occurrence of intimate relationships expands our emotions and affections. These scenarios most often occur in our adolescent years. Why is it so important that we have these romantic scenarios for example dates? Through these scenarios we find what is common in many relationships through learning what you see around us, but also through your own experience. We learn a lot about ourselves, which goes hand in hand with mental health improving our confidence, but also through knowing ourselves better, we find what fulfils our relationship wants and needs, but also someone else’s.  

Even though a lot of people enjoy knowing someone’s wants and needs, what about the people that don’t find their fish? How does not having romance effect their health? Although there are a lot of benefits to being in a relationship, there are a lot of benefits of being independent. “After surveying more than 13,000 men and women between ages 18 and 64, researchers found that those who were single and had never been married worked out more frequently each week” (Brodwin1). This quote is informing that more single people are physically healthier than those who are with married. Exercise not only improves your physical health but your mental health as well, studies have shown that exercise releases positive chemicals in your brain called endorphins and dopamine that make you feel happier which also helps reduce stress levels. Another myth that single people are lonely is false. “being single actually increases social connections, according to a study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. That’s because they reach out more to their social networks, and give and receive more help from those contacts compared to their married counterparts” (Mateo1). This study proves that single people have more connections to friends then married people due to the fact they reach out and surround themselves with a lot of friends and family, so they always feel connected to others.

It’s important to know how much of an essential building block relationships play on not only our mental health, for example, having an emotional bond with someone, but also our learning process and how we absorb essential life lessons in our adolescence years. The claim that romantic relationships are considered essential interpersonal relationships is supported by studies arguing romantic relationships encourage personal growth, decrease stress and increase quality of life. Romance is beneficial to our health, but it is valuable to be aware that if a person cannot find romantic interpersonal love it is possible to compensate by surrounding yourself with people you love. Love and nurturing love is love and essential to a whole person.  We need to be loved not to be in love.
