Imagine going on vacation and making a friend. When it’s time to go back home, you decide to write to each other. Imagine learning that you can’t be friends with her anymore because she doesn’t have enough money to buy pencils and paper. This is how Hannah Godefa learned about poverty when she was only 7 years old. In recent years, it’s clear that activists don’t have to be adults anymore. These teen activists have raised awareness for their causes. They are making a significant impact on these critical issues in our imperfect world. Teen activists have lots of different paths to choose from when working on their problems: they are inspired in a variety of ways, they are supported by people in their lives. And they spread their message in multiple ways.

Important Inspiration

Activists are inspired in a variety of ways. Some teen activists are encouraged to take action when they have a personal experience with the issue. For example, Malala Yousafzai fought for girls' educational rights after the Taliban shut down her school. She believed that she should be able to go to school even though she was a girl. Other activists become inspired when they learn about a problem in the world. Another example is Alex Lin. He was inspired to try and prevent electronic waste (e-waste) dumping in his city and state after reading about the dangers of e-waste in a Wall Street Journal article. After reading that article, he knew he couldn’t let e-waste dumping continue happening, so he decided to try to eradicate e-waste dumping. All activists have a moment of inspiration. Some are based on personal experience, and others learn about an issue.

Seeking Support

People support activists and their causes in many ways. Some activists get support from family and friends that believe in their cause. For example, Craig Keilburger fought against child labor, but he was too young to stand up for his cause alone. Craig presented what he knew and what he wanted to do to his classmates, and they helped him call charities and organize fundraisers. On the other hand, some activists get support from strangers. Boyan Slat organized crowdfunding and asked for donations to fund the Ocean Cleanup projects. 38,000 people from 160 countries donated to support his project. In total, he raised 2.2 million dollars. No activist could be successful without support from others. Some activists received help from family/friends and some from strangers worldwide.

Moral Messages

Activists spread their message about their cause in many ways. Some activists spread their message by posting on social media. For example, Marley Dias posted on Twitter about her goal to reach 1,000 books about black girls; she ended up being on the Ellen show because the tweet went viral. She received 10,000 dollars from Ellen DeGeneres, and Marley has now collected 11,000 books, which was more than she ever expected. Other activists lead protests to spread their message about their cause. It was because of that tweet that Marley stopped the cessation of one type of book in a library. Another instance is when Greta Thunberg skipped school every Friday to protest and inform people about climate change. Her protests incited many others to protest with her. To make a change, activists have to spread their message to educate others about their cause. Some activists spread their message using social media, and others organize protests.

Teen activists have lots of different paths when working on their cause: they are inspired in various ways, they are supported by different people in their lives, and they spread their message in multiple ways. We all know about problems in the world like climate change, child labor, and ocean pollution, but how many of us are actually doing something about it? That’s why every one of these teen activists is important. They are the only ones that are doing something about it. Like Greta Thunberg said, “We already have all the facts and solutions. All we have to do is wake up and change.” Now that you know all about these problems, be part of the solution.
