Over the years many films have been made based on plays or famous books. Often, these films succeed in portraying the images and thoughts of the writer of those books or films. The famous play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the Crucible, and the film have many differences and similarities. These all help change the plot, characters, mood for the play which has been set into the film.

John Proctor and Abigail had some interactions with each other in the past which has now caused conflicts between a lot of things. In the play, Abigail was not that obsessed with John Proctor as she is in the movie. In the film, Abigail kisses and gropes John Proctor behind a house, while in the play this scene was not as severe. The film shows Abigail as a psycho that is obsessed with Jonh Proctor and getting his wife to be hanged for witchcraft. John Proctor ends up turning himself in to save his wife and that is not what Abigail wanted to happen. Abigail visited John Proctor in jail in the film, but this never happened in the play. The play stuck to the roots of the information and conflict while the film added scenes and feelings as well. Most added scenes were outside as the entire play was based inside.

On the other hand, there are two similarities that I saw between the play and the film which are when Abigail threatens the girls to lie, or she will do something to them, and the second similarity is when Abigail steals Reverend Parris money. When Abigail finds out they are investigating witchcraft situations she gets angry. She threatens the girls and is not afraid to show what she is willing to do. Abigail said “Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam's s dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this- let either of you breathe a word or the edge of about the other things, and I will come you in the black of some terrible and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ head on the pillow next to mine, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!” She knew if someone told the truth, they would all get in trouble, and she did not want that. She made sure no one was going to say a word and told them to lie. Towards the end, not everything went as she planned. As well as when she stole the money, she saw that everything was downward for her. She made everything go too far and locked up the person she wanted, which was John Proctor. When she saw what had happened, all she wanted was to run away from Salem with him, with the money that she took.

In conclusion, whenever watching a film or reading a play there will always be a difference to make the film or the play more interesting. To me, it made the film more interesting and dramatic. Overall, both the film and the play were professionally written, and the author really made it grab the reader’s attention.
