Essay Sample on The Murder of Ahmaud Arbery

On February 23, 2020, Ahamud Arbery a 25-year-old black man was chased down and killed by two armed white men around 1 pm.  Ahmaud Arbery was out running in Brunswick, Georgia when two white supremacists men, Gregory and Travis McMichael, saw him, and chased him. Travis got in a struggle with ahmaud and shot him, multiple times. He was unarmed and did nothing wrong. The father and son were both former police officers who took weapons before chasing him down.  Both being former police officers stationed in Satilla Shores and were known to frequent the area. This incident was recorded by William Bryan and he also used his vehicle in attempt to catch ahmaud.

It starts at a Georgia family-owned construction home. There’s footage of multiple people snooping around the home at different times. The family says that nothing was taken by anyone and nothing was broken. There’s one black male that was spotted coming to the home multiple times, they think for water. On February 23, 2020, the day Mr. Arbery decided to go on his daily jog and stopped at this construction home. There was a 911 call from someone saying “There's a guy in the house right now, it’s under construction”. When Mr. Arbery left the home he was running. “Travis the guy is running down the street let’s go.” Says Gregory (Abc News). He was chased for a while down a street until they reached William Bryan Jr’s home. At that point, Mr. Bryan decides to join the chase and help catch Mr. Arbery.  This is when they both immediately arm themselves with a shotgun and a 357 magnum, hop into their pickup truck, chase him down, and shoot him. Mr. Bryan was the person to record the incident and help stop Ahmaud. 

Ahmaud Arbery was confused with another black man that had been spotted at the home. There were plenty of people spotted there but Mr. Arbery was stereotyped and presumed to be a thief. This happens all the time where black people are seen as bad people and up to no good. It’s not right for someone to be on a jog and be stalked at a house, then chased down and accused of something he didn’t do. They say Mr. Arbery suffered from an illness that caused him to have auditory hallucinations. Ahmaud was defenseless and unarmed. There is something wrong with the Father who originally spotted Ahmaud "he was banned from carrying a gun on duty, and restricted from doing any '“real police work.”'(Grassroots Law Project). Gregory McMichael had refused to take training for de-escalating situations. This shows that he is impulsive and an instigator. 

These men should be charged with everything they did illegally. They should be charged with attempted kidnapping and murder. That's just two, there's a lot more they are charged with. “ In addition to the hate-crime charges, Count Three alleges that all three defendants attempted to unlawfully seize and confine Arbery by chasing after him in their trucks in an attempt to restrain him, restrict his free movement, corral and detain him against his will, and prevent his escape”(Department of Justice). What they did is something no one should have to be put through. No one should have to worry about being chased down and killed for checking out a home. The guy that helped chase down Mr. Arbery should be charged as well. He helped these men block in Ahmaud and keep him from running. But thankfully we have video evidence of what really happened so these men could be seen doing what they did wrong. 

These men were wrong for what they did and should be convicted. We are getting justice for Ahmaud. The two brothers and the one who recorded the video are being tried in court in February of 2022. We are getting justice for Ahmaud Arbery’s death.
