Essay Sample on Use of Animals in Biomedical Research

In the story, I acknowledge Mine Jane Goodall is going into a biomedical research lab where they conduct experiments on chimpanzees. When she enters this lab she sees all these chimps in tight spaces with barely enough space to survive. Jane Goodal claims that researchers doing these experiments on these chimps should see what type of damage they have caused to these animals and see if all the suffering by these chimps is really worth the result. She is trying to give people a heads up on what these tests have done to these animals do to them negatively. She does this by emotional appeal, Ethos, and loaded language.

Jane Goodall uses emotional appeal to get the reader to be sad and feel bad for these chimps. The author does this by telling us how the chimps are treated. She first saw how they were being treated was when she watched a videotape that showed stuff that was happening in one of the biomedical research labs where monkeys were pacing back and forth and also all these monkeys in small cages on top of each other. In lines 2-8 she says this “We all sat watching the tape, and we were all shattered. Afterward, we couldn’t speak for a while. The tape showed scenes from inside a biomedical research laboratory, in which monkeys paced round and round, back and forth, within incredibly small cages stacked one on top of the other, and young chimpanzees, in similar tiny prisons, rocked back and forth or from side to side, far gone in misery and despair.” The events she was describing in the video could’ve caused some readers to already be emotional and on her side. In conclusion, emotional appeal is one of the biggest factors that contribute to her goal with this story.

Jane Goodall also uses Ethos to have more credibility and have people believe her more because she literally experienced going into one of these labs. What causes her to go into one of these biomedical labs is a tape she saw with her family inside of these labs in Sema and saw how bad the situation was. In lines 17-20 she says “Even repeated viewing of the videotape had not prepared me for the stark reality of that laboratory. I was ushered, by white-coated men who smiled nervously or glowered, into a nightmare world.”This shows how her experience was when entering the lab and that is an example of Ethos. This causes some readers to have more faith in her story and she can make the story more convincing now that she had a first-hand experience going into the lab. In conclusion, Ethos convinces the reader more than a 3rd person view.
