The motion "Should abortion stay legal in the United States" is controversial, with many people supporting and opposing it. Some believe that aborting a kid is "stealing a child's life," while others argue that "women deserve the freedom to make their own health decisions." Many individuals are split on this subject; others believe that abortion should be allowed in certain circumstances, including as medical emergencies, rape, incest, and financial difficulties. I believe that abortion should be allowed in the United States because I know it is a fundamental right for women and that every woman should be able to fully control her own body. Legal abortion can aid in the treatment of health problems, lower crime rates, and minimize the number of illegal and damaging abortions.

The state of New York declared abortion illegal in 1829, and anti-abortion legislation was passed. A law was passed in the state of New York that states that anybody who performs abortions risks a term of 4 to 20 years in prison. With the rise of the abortion law reform in the 1960s, things began to shift, and people began to protest and fight for legal abortion. Illegal abortion was rather popular before the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

From 1969 until 1973, a group, known as the Jane Collective, performed thousands of illegal abortions. Many of the abortions were performed without the required equipment and by people who were not medical professionals. Many of the methods used were harmful to women's health, resulting in incomplete abortions (the failure to remove or expel all baby tissue from the uterus), hemorrhage (severe bleeding), infection, and other complications such vaginal penetration (produced by a sharp item piercing the uterus). The dangers of unsafe abortions and the data on them "Each year, unsafe abortion is responsible for 4.7–13.2 percent of maternal mortality"

In wealthy countries, 30 women are predicted to die for every 100,000 unsafe abortions."

There was, however, a well-known Supreme Court ruling called Roe v. Wade that gave abortion rights to women. Norma McCorvey, a Dallas waitress, became Jane Roe. She filed a lawsuit against Dallas County District Attorney Henry Wade in March 1970, claiming that Texas laws prohibiting abortion were unconstitutional.

This led in the well-known Roe v. Wade Supreme court  case, which protects a pregnant woman's right to choose whether or not to have an abortion without government influence.

These abortion rights demonstrate the rights to life, liberty, and happiness.

Abortion is one of the most controversial problems in the United States, with people using religious beliefs to call it evil, while people argue that a woman should given the ability to make decisions about her own body. Some congress people are attempting to repeal a major 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision. Roe v. Wade, a Supreme Court decision, made abortion allowed in all 50 states.

Many states, including Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and others, are attempting to govern abortion laws and place restrictions on abortion. Texas has one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the country, almost outlawing abortion.

Women are liberated by abortion access because they have control over their bodies.

“a woman’s autonomy to determine her life’s course, and thus to enjoy equal citizenship stature.” (Toobin people’s choice). This author supports abortion and argues that a woman's right to her body is equivalent to her freedom. “Roe v. Wade was “a landmark of what is, in the truest sense, women’s liberation.” (Toobin People’s choice) Abortion rights, according to this author, empowers women by providing them power over their own bodies. The author also mentions the Roe vs. Wade case, arguing that it led to real women's liberation.

The Supreme Court of the United States has proclaimed abortion to be a constitutionally protected right. “a guarantee of certain areas or zones of privacy,” (Roe V.s Wade) This implies that the right of privacy  is clear enough to show a woman's decision whether or not to stop her pregnancy, and this provides a reason why abortion should remain legal. “Though the State cannot override that right, it has legitimate interests in protecting both the pregnant woman's health and the potentiality of human life” (Roe V.s Wade) Because it protects pregnant women's health and the potentiality of human life, the supreme court cannot remove this right. This demonstrates why abortion should remain legal in America because it is essential to a woman's health and freedom.

Abortion reduces crime, “ Around 18 years after abortion was legalized, crime rates began to drop abruptly, and crime rates dropped earlier in states that allowed abortion earlier.” ( Levitt, "The Impact of Legalized Abortion on Crime") The author agrees that abortion should be permitted because crime rates started to decline once it was legalized. This, together with the fact that crime rates dropped sooner in states that allowed abortion earlier, confirms my claim about how abortion reduces crime. “The women who had control over when they had children were more likely to raise their children in ideal environments; crime is reduced when legal abortion is available.”(Levitt, “The Impact of Legalized Abortion on Crime”) Due to abortions, women were given the chance to have babies when they wanted them, giving them a better place to raise their children and decreasing crime rates. This source supports my statement that abortion reduces crime rates.

Although some say Women should carry the burden that comes with having a kid if they become pregnant. “But suppose that a woman has not willingly taken the risk of getting pregnant and so did not have any choice in the conception (perhaps she has been raped, for example)”

This claim is supported by my findings, which demonstrates that not all women wanted to take the risk of becoming pregnant; in fact, many did not have a choice in the case. This supports my position that abortion should stay legal in order to allow these women who did not have a choice in conception to end their pregnancies and go on with their lives. “when the woman does not understand, or is incapable of understanding, that sexual intercourse leads to pregnancy. She may live in an area where sex education is inadequate, for example.” Some women who become pregnant lack proper sex education, such as young teenagers who are unaware of the duties of motherhood and young children who are given the chance to experience life without having to face the burden of having a kid.

This subject is important because it is a current issue; states are attempting to restrict abortion laws and are attempting to find a way to repeal them.
