For the past couple decades, humans have started to be replaced by robots in the workplace. Employers have started to implement robots in their companies for many reasons, the main one being that robots don’t make the same kind of mistakes that humans do. If there aren’t any bugs in their code, robots can do specific tasks fast and with no hesitation since they don’t have the same set of circumstances that humans require to do their jobs correctly. Humans can get sick, quit, or show up to work late, they also need to have a set work schedule that doesn’t interfere with their own personal agendas, unlike robots who have nothing else to do other than work. If the technology is advanced enough, these robots can last a long time, having the opportunity to cost less than employing a handful of workers. While this all sounds like a good thing, especially to employers, this can be detrimental to society and can cause a severe lack of jobs for working-class people. Should robots replace human workers?

This issue has really come to my attention as of late since I am furthering my college education and will need to look for a career soon. Growing up I had always seen clips from TV shows like How It’s Made which showed the manufacturing process of various things and I always noticed that a lot of episodes featured robots that were working in the factories instead of humans. The idea of robots working with humans always interested me and seemed like it would be cool, but the technology has advanced over the last few years and now some of those robots have completely replaced their human counterparts.

I know that integration of robots in the workplace has been essential in the success of many businesses, mainly in places that specialize in mass production, such as factories. They have also been very beneficial for space exploration and that they have drastically reduced the risk of humans getting injured in dangerous jobs like mining and construction. I also know that they can’t create themselves, which is great for those who are pursuing a career in technology-related careers, creating a surge in companies hiring people that can program and/or build these robots.

I will need to collect data on this subject to properly reflect the impact on working-class citizens that these robots have created. How much have they effected unemployment rates? Have they made more people look for technology related careers? Is it unfair to those who prefer manual labor? I’m also curious to find out how widespread the use of working robots is. Finally, I will look at the numbers and see if I think that robots should replace human workers or not.
