Have you ever heard the phrase “A dog is a man’s best friend.” The BSL (Breed-specific Legislation) is a term that bans certain breeds of dogs. It mainly focuses on the Pitbull breed, including Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and English Bulls. Pitbull mixes like American Bulldog, Rottweilers, Mastiff, Dalmatians, Chow Chows, German Shepards, and Doberman Pinschers are also a part of the ban. Even though they look scary, pit bulls want love and affection like any other dog. By being handled abusively when they are young they grow up to be scared and defensive to protect themselves from ever being abused or put in harm's way again, The pitbull breed is not the only breed that is presumed dangerous.

They have faced Pitbulls as attackers since 43 CE when the Romans were invading Britain. They turned the dogs that were used for entertainment during the war into attackers to fight against wild animals including animals bigger than them such as elephants. The BSL looks at the dog bite and blames the dog breed and not the owner, the owner is just as responsible for the dog bite as the dog is. Statistics show that 84% of pit bull dog owners neglect them and leave them to die and starve. Owners of pit bulls most of the time don’t take the time to show pit bulls love and affection; they just chain or tie them up outside throughout the rain, snow, sleet, and hail.  Most of them lack obedience training.

Pitbull mixes make up 6% of the United States dog population which may not seem like much but every little percent counts. Pitbulls are also the most abused and neglected dog breed in America. They have a strong reputation for being a family and therapy dog. Also, they are used  as police and service dogs. They are also relative healthy and don’t really need to be groomed, they are very athletic, they are great protectors and great with children, they have so much personality and are hilarious. Pitbulls are euthized in many shelters and are least likely to get adopted because of what we knew them for in the past.

Pitbulls are not the only breed that are presumed mean or aggressive. Akita, Chihuahuas, and Cane Corso are also classified to be aggressive and mean but they are not trying to ban them. Only the dogs that get treated the worst are trying to get banned. They are just misunderstood and not given an honest chance. Pitbulls should not be banned because of what how the dogs were used in the past     In conclusion, Pitbulls are treated poorly and are never given the chance to be loved and shown affection because people use and abuse them for money and their own entertainment. They should be loved and treated fairly like any other breed. They didn’t choose to be aggressive or treated poorly. They are very helpful to police and service animals.
