While watching each of these videos I found them very different and similar at the same time. I have always found a hard time figuring out why describing what dance felt like to me because I associate dance with the music rather than the actual dancing itself. Being in show choir and marching band is more choreographed rather than personal pleasure.

Starting in Nigeria, I remember reading about the Igbo tribes in high school. I do not remember the whole book, but I remember how proud they were of their culture and their tribes. While watching the dance, I found it to be extremely beautiful. I thought the way they presented themselves and projected themselves was very powerful and showed their pride in their culture. The leader calls out orders as the rest of her ensemble follows in a unison pattern. The movements look almost effortless from the dancers as they move from a grounded stance to squatted and back to a grounded position. Onto the music, they follow the dancers and kept a steady tempo with beautiful wind instruments. I would like to mention that this dance is a great example of polycentrism because of the dancers going from high to low and their arm movements differing from the leg or other parts of the body,

Another video that showed polycentrism was the Egyptian dancer. She twirled her cane and used the prop everywhere and kept moving other parts of her body.  I will note that her hips were the main canter of her body because of how she moves them when the tempo speeds up. I think that this dance is different compared to the Igbo tribe because this is a solo dance, and they were more vertical with their dancing while this dancer focused on the horizontal area she could reach with her hips. I would also like to bring attention to the different costumes that the dancers wore. The Egyptian dancer wore a vertical yellow and black dress that accentuated every curve in her body but still flowed. Every time the dancer moved her hips, the dress would cause an illusion that makes the audience almost trance to watch her move her hips, which is completely different from the tribe. They wore skirts and cropped tanks tops because of the nature of their country, they must wear less clothing and it meshed with their dance quite well in my opinion.

Next, I want to comment on the Congolese dance, I found this dance my favorite out of all of them. Possibly because the dancers also sang, and it sounded so elegant, and I connected with it because of that and did not as much on the others. This dance starts off with the leader and then is joined by another woman and they duet for a little bit. Next, an ensemble of men and women join them, and they all sing together. When the drums come in the women start the dance. It is like the Igbo tribe’s dance with similar arm movements and the bent knee grounded position. They dance at a fast pace which makes the beads on their clothes shake and make noise to add to the music the musicians are playing. After the women leave, the men join and they dance with the leader, in the same knee-bent move as the women. The way these dancers move looks like a wave in their body the way they smoothly transition motion from one part of the body to another. I think this is like the Egyptian dance because they also used multilevel dancing frequently to make this beautiful dance. The difference between both other dances compared to this one is that there are men in the dancing ensemble. I found it refreshing, especially because without them, the singing would not be the same and would not have the same effect. Every time I watch this dance it makes me want to dance along with them even if I do not know the dance the rhythm makes me want to move to the beat.
