Can you believe that over 4 billion people don't actually know how to swim? Which is 65% of the entire population! In Australia, 20% of children graduate primary school without being able to swim 50 meters. Rob Bradley, the former CEO of the Royal Life Saving Society, stated that there are not enough schools that give swimming lessons to students.  For this, I understand why swimming lessons should be compulsory in schools. Students should take swimming lessons for many acceptable reasons. These reasons include when coming into contact with water. Swimming can also relieve stress and has many health benefits. And swimming lessons outside of school can become unaffordable. I will start off by explaining why swimming lessons can be beneficial when coming upon water.

To start with, lacking the ability or skills to swim is one of the most common ways to drown. Research shows that over 236,000-360,000 people die every year from drowning. Which means the majority of the people drowning every year are most likely to die from not being able to swim. Schools should make swimming lessons compulsory because people dying from drowning would decrease.

On top of that, swimming lessons can have many health benefits. Swimming ameliorates your strength, it tones your muscles and increases your metabolism. It also lowers the risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and chronic illnesses. It can also help you maintain control over your cholesterol levels. Swimming is also excellent for cardiovascular health. And it strengthens the heart, lungs, brain and blood vessels. It is not only beneficial for health reasons but it is also a life skill. So schools should teach students how to swim as a way of safety.

Finally, taking swimming lessons should be a necessity for how it is a life skill. Yet, swimming lessons can become expensive to some parents. Ranging anywhere from $20-$445 per lesson. Swimming lessons at school would most likely only bring the school fees up by a small amount. Not anywhere near $400!  According to the national research study by the USA Swimming Foundation. If a parent does not know how to swim, there is only a 13% chance that a child of that household will. But if swimming lessons are compulsory, children will have to learn how to swim regardless.

Taking everything into consideration, swimming lessons should be essential at schools. For reasons I have stated previously, swimming lessons are important for children. And need to be mandatory at schools. They are significant for children's and adults' safety. Making swimming lessons compulsory at schools would be much better for children's safety. As well as their health and would be better for parents financially. To put it in another way, swimming lessons at school would be better for the community and families.
